Q: Why is the price of eggs suddenly outrageously high?

Where I live they've gradually climbed to 2 RMB per egg. Did the chickens go on strike or something?

Have no idea at the place you live, but where I live I pay 1 Rmb per each double yoke eggs, and price has been the same for the last 2 years.  I do buy maybe 12 per week, and if I make any desserts, probably use more(like a custard).
