Today, smoking remains a stubborn habit because it is an integral part of Chinese social life. Offering a cigarette is a common way to greet someone..REALLY?

I come from a place where smoking was an accepted "vice"  ..I smoke and I drink, both beer and hard liquor ...... and I work my ass off every day.  Smoking is old, been around forever,,,, a form of relaxation and enjoyment in many many many cultures.

the new health guys, selling their products, have decided that it will kill me ...  maybe before I am 100 ................  well you know what....  I am willing to die before I am 100.

It is not accepted in China or anywhere nowadays....   but I don't believe it is anything more than pharmaceutical  companies making a buck.

see you when I am 100 ..smoke in hand...... beer in hand and toothless and happy

I love smoking. I smoked cigars. I really REALLY loved smoking cigars, especially Dominican brands.  I started at 16 and only recently, at 45 did I quit, but not because I want to.

I am 15  years older than my fiance.  I do not want to leave her a young widow, nor do I want to saddle her with taking care of an invalid. That is the only reason why I quit smoking. For her and because I want to last as long as possible for my children when we have them.

If not for her, I would continue smoking and the hell with what others say.  It is actually one of the things I love(ed) about China.

Note, she NEVER asked me to quit. I did so because I love her and I dont want her to suffer what  m y mom did when my father and grand father died of smoking related cancer.

BHGAL:

I suspect that smoking is going to be my downfall .... but only because I have become so lazy ...... if I was still out "working" doing something .... it wouldn't be smoking that kills me....  old age only.

I don't know why is smoking considered acceptable behavior, because it is NOT acceptable for women to be smoking in China. Maybe it's a way of socializing for Chinese men.

I don't smoke, but it's my personal decision, I don't care how other people might judge me.

GuilinRaf:

Actually, as a former smoker, I agree with you. Smoking is not acceptable, especially in front of women or children.

When I was alone, I simply did not care. But now, I have a good reason to quit.

If I was alone, I would still be smoking, I just found something worth quitting for.

Good luck! My father quit drinking when I was born. You can also take care of your health.

Yesl I guess it is a matter of finding something worth quitting for.

Mind you, she never EVER asked me to quit smoking. I did so because of her.

If I were single, I would not give a rats (_i_)....
