Fox demons belong to the Chinese myths for some time already.
In the new area the word received the second meaning - Xiao San.
People generally understand both these meanings in negative connotations.
Why is that?
For the first one there is no real reason to believe that real fox demon is bad. The stories from ancient times are mentioning about a lot of good and kind fox demons but the people still believe fox demon is bad.
For the second one I can understand the married women certainly like to hate them but for the rest of population it shall not be such a big problem.
Any idea?
Firstly: Did you ever say which country you are from?
In my experience, users who are not up-front about their nationality (e.g. gouxiong) are generally dishonest and a waste of everyone's time.
And don't say "Europe". Europe isn't a country unless you're Chinese.
Secondly: "There is no real reason to believe that real fox demon is bad."
There are no real fox demons.

OP might be Czech, Slovak or Polish .... by 'handle's guesstimation'.
Shining_brow:
I don't recall him (her??) saying actual nationality, but did say his 1st language is Czechoslovakian - Czech from one parent, and Slovak from another.
Why so?
I see no problem with most of Janosik's posts (other than the ones where he disagrees with me :p).Well, ok, there are a couple relating to a bit more of a 'pro-China tendency'... but the majority are clearly NOT wumao material!
Stiggs:
I have to say I think Janosik's posts are reasonable and well within the bounds of normal debate. He or she has different views sometimes but that's cool, I like the different perspective on things whether I agree or not.
Janosik:
It's actually funny how some people are so, hm ..., strange. And yes, I mean you.
Your life in China can be hard ...
I just hope you cannot speak Chinese well, as otherwise the environment would most probably push you down from your ilusional pedestal quote fast ...
I was born in Czechoslovakia if it helps you ...
Janosik:
@Samsara
By the way the fact that you did not meet any fox demon does not mean they do not exist ...
xinyuren:
Gouxiong, yes! Thank you Samsara! I've been trying to remember that Chinese guy last year pretending to be a westerner. He is a dead ringer for Janosik. I've straining my brain for the last week trying to remember that name.
Janosik:
@Xinyuren
And may be you are Chinese. Some Christians in China show similar level of bigotry like you demonstrated in different threads.
So what.
Does it make you less fanatic? No, it does not.
I really do not care what's your nationality and knowing it would not influence my opinion on your contributions.
But everybody's choice ...
Janosik:
@RiRi
Oh, is it because among your 'can speak languages' set Czech and/or Slovak is missing and therefore you cannot verify me as native speaker of one of this language?
Or is it because your paranoia did get worse lately ...
'cause human is abusing animals ......

THIS MAN TRAINED BEES TO MAKE HONEY FROM WEED
The man they call Nick Trainerbee is a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. He’s a locksmith, an artist, a marijuana advocate, a Frenchman (edit: '...like Sino ....'), and a beekeeper. But when Nick combined his interests and started looking at the ways bees could interact with cannabis, he might have become a genius as well.
Nick has figured out how to train his bees to extract the resin from cannabis buds, creating a 100% natural weed honey.
You see now, what am saying....

What's a Fox demon? I've never heard of it.
I do know if you say a girl is a fox, or foxy here it doesn't have the same meaning it does does in the west. Here bad, Western countries good.
Janosik:
Then I suggest you check following webpage for quick reference:
http://academia.issendai.com/fox-chinese.shtml
It's actually very Chinese, Korean and Japanese thing (in Japanese called Kitsune, in Korean Kumiho and in Chinese Hu Li Jing).
Generally to make a story short:
1) If a fox tries hard in its life so when she turns 100 years she receives the gift of magic
2) Subsequently every century one more tail
3) Nine tail fox, thousand years old one, turns immortal
There are a lot of nice stories about fox demon but the later ones (and current ones) are describing them like blood (and sex) lusting creatures.
There are male and female fox demons but as nowadays Chinese the word Hu Li Jing means a woman staling husband from the family so majority of current Chinese believe there are just female fox demons.
I haven't yet looked at the mythologies, but is it possible the word 'demon' is being mistranslated.. maybe 'spirit' should be a better word?
Traditionally, foxes are seen as quite cunning...and cunning is associated with ruthlessness...???
Janosik:
Yes, the translation is always hard. I agree that fox spirit cold be closer but I always had a feeling that spirit means something not having the physical body ...
They have very physical body ...
The problem in China is that being called fox is real offense. In my language we call such people rats, in China fox.
I think it's lately connected with the second word meaning - woman stealing husband from the family.
But really do not understand why because China is a country of Xiao Sans and nobody sees any big deal with it ...
I think that up to the new law which restricted polygamy in China (still in the beginning of the last century it was quite common), nobody saw a big deal with it (except of some 'strange' women). After that the situation changed dramatically.
Shining_brow:
Oh - well maybe that's why 'demon' is a better word than just 'spirit'... because demons can materialise.
Have you tried to ask "why are foxes considered bad in China?" in a search?
Janosik:
Never thought about that. Good idea!
But I also intend to ask why so many people in here tries hard to divide the contributors among 'us' and 'them'
Shining_brow:
Firstly, I'd actually hazard a guess that when translations were happening, there was a christian influence, and so any 'spirit' that wasn't human (or maybe plant) or of 'divine' origin was automatically translated as 'demon'... unless there are obvious examples to counter that idea..??
yeah - I notice that :(
Personally, if someone is Chinese (eg, Spongebob), then I'm happy to have them be Chinese, and it really makes for China-related discussion easier!
I think the problem comes down to - praising China from a 'foreigner' it somehow supposed to make such posts more legit. Praising China from a mainland person is just normal, and easy to shrug off as just nationalism. But when it comes from a non-mainland person is a testament to how great the country is <cough>.
Janosik:
Opened the thread now
I find China to be great country. Full of potential.
If I am or I am not Chinese so it will not influence my opinion much (provided the Chinese had enough chances to see and experience non Chinese experience).
EU has great welfare system.
But who wants to live on welfare???
I think that EU should radically reform its welfare model and that could also probably noticeably reduce the immigrants
I doubt folks on this site have anything to say about this, me included. If you are seeking serious info/debate might I suggest you seek out reputalbe sources in China. The Chinese mythology dept at a decent university, or a temple with alot of monks, etc. Might need to bring along a interpreter/translator with ya. GL
Janosik:
Agree.
Apparently not that many people on this forum show liking of traditional Chinese culture.
Was hoping having interesting discussion but not the right topic for this forum
