It's not just for political, censorship reasons. It's also protectionism. Things like soundcloud, Uber, groupon and other novel ideas that are easily copied will have government imposed restrictions to give Chinese companies a chance to steal the idea and capture the local market. Why can't 711 sell cigarettes? To give Chinese convenient stores an advantage in the game.

Baidu music is actually pretty good for mainstream, douban is good for indie / alternative.

WooMow:

Protip: Once you've listened to a song on soundcloud with a vpn once, you don't need a vpn the second time because it's cached.

I use soundcloud! You can get into it with a vpn. My suggestion is download the app and 'like' the tunes, then you can listen to them with out the vpn like WooMow said. I also use krougo and baidu.

Because they can. Also like most people have mentioned, protectionism. Why should Chinese companies provide a good service the government can just force the foreign companies to give a poor service.

A:I'll give my two cents on the age part. It's not as easy but can definitely be done. I was 21, fresh out of university and landed my first teaching job in china as a homeroom kindergarten teacher on a pretty standard 20,000/month salary. I'm 1 year in now and am still happy. Pretty much all international kindergarten jobs on here want 2 years experience, but many will still accept if you have experience in your home country. With that being said, being white and having a nice looking face is much more of a decision factor in china vs the west, if you can- use it to your advantage. Good luck finding something! -- brinsleym
