Q: WHY is there no 500 or 1000 RMB notes?

I mean really... I need a backpack to pay my rent.

You'd have to have a pretty strong currency for that...

And who in the world wants RMB to appreciate in value? Insane! Cool Cool

Imagine being in the US where the highest note you can get is a $10 bill...

I'm assuming it's because there would be counterfeit issues, but I don't think just printing a 500rmb note will appreciate the RMB, it would just make it easier to carry.

like njord said. it would make to much sense.
besides. i think they enjoy lugging around giant wads of 100s, it makes you feel like you have a lot of money. two 500 rmb bills doesn't feel as good as ten 100 bills.

Wenna, I was not asking the question to make fun of China, I was actually asking because I wanted to know why there was not a larger size bill.

But thanks for responding like a complete tool!

I think I know the actual answer:

So long as people generally do not use credit/debit cards as we do in the west, and so long as employers continue to pay in straight cash payments no one wants bills floating around that cant be readily made change for.

In the US, while we do have bigger bills its really impractical to try to use anything bigger than a 20. While fat wads of cash are a pain the money system is designed in favor of every day usability.

I once asked a Chinese person this question and they told me no Chinese wants to look like they only get paid 3 or 4 notes each pay day...a big wad of cash simply makes them feel richer...

In the UK we have a 50pound note but it is not often used and if you try and spend it in some places the counter assistant does not look very happy with you...its a lot more work to give change for a 500 than a 100rmb note especially for a smaller shop....Ive been told its illegal for shops to refuse RMB weather too small or too big so maybe smaller sellers would need to keep larger amounts of cash on hand if 500s existed...

No one ever wants to break a hundred. I'd rather not have larger bills.

Besides, what's the average salary in China anyway?
