Q: Why is there no warning or mention on the Internet about Chinese eating habits?

I decided to come to China and teach for a while, knowing China is a third world country: I came prepared for the worst. But nothing really prepared me for what awaited me inside restaurants and in the street. Basically, anywhere there is food and Chinese people: is a place I don't want to be.

I had huge problems with the slurping sounds when I first arrived and on more than one occasion I left a restaurant without eating because of the sheer disgust Chinese eating habits provoke in me: Slurping, belching, nose picking, spitting, chewing with mouth open, talking while chewing food.

| wont even start with the cleanliness (or total lack of it) in all restaurants.

I tried (at first) changing restaurants. I imagined that if I went to a higher class restaurant with higher class Chinese people, it would be different.......WRONG. A Chinese person with money is the same as a Chinese person without money.

Finally just when I thought I'd seen it all, came the cell phone attack! The Chinese and their cell phones! I noticed more and more frequently that Chinese/ people have good manners when it comes to speaking on the cell phone. Knowing
that they annoy the people at their own table with the shouting telephone technique: they decide to sit at my table or at the table of other unsuspecting people.

I scoured the internet but I found very few comments on Chinese eating habits from other foreigners. Is it that I'm the only one made to feel dirty by the Chinese and others don't really mind it?

To be frank, I've tried to accept it and get used to it but to be honest I can't respect people who eat their food like animals. Even my dog has more manners and I'm not joking.

What does everyone else think?

Don't you love it when there is something bad it's a "cultural difference" and you always "need to learn to respect that"?

This of course never ever applies to the Chinese.

I hate to disappoint but I have travelled, in fact, I've probably travelled more than Marco Polo himself ,speak more languages and know more cultures. Since you mentioned travelling as an excuse for the way Chinese eat to make me seem ignorant, I am in fact, inclined to think that you, like oh so many Chinese, (and you are obviously Chinese by the way you kung-fu the English language) have never left China nor know more than the old toothless man at the end of the street. Do not patronise me as we both know that the future advances and does not look back, hence there is no way on earth that western eating habits will ever be considered more disgusting than the most disgusting: which is that of the Chinese. I have yet to see you eat your own faecal matter but I wont be surprised when the day comes. I do not doubt that when in Rome do as the Romans, but no mention of the sheer lack of manners the Chinese have does not justify their lack of such.

I would also like to add that many cultures talk while eating, including western cultures, we just do it in a civilized way and not like chimpanzees.

I respect the difference but do not adhere to it nor like it. In fact I'm here in china to change the ignorance from which you are all obviously suffering.

I have not taken offence by your post but as carefully as I reply I know you will be offended because the truth hurts and sometimes it is brutal.

P.S. I hope you didn't type that with your mouth full.

I have to back up golden boy here. I've lived in five countries, and been to twice that number, but no one even comes close to the Chinese.

I usually don't care, as I'm not squeamish, but sometimes going into the break room after lunch, and seeing piles of bone pieces on the table, knowing they've been spit out. Just disgusting. Or how they don't just spit the bones out, they let them gradually exit their mouths in that horrible way. This summer, a woman even let her baby poo in the middle of a fast food place, and it was the most runny, smelly diarrhea. I couldn't eat for two days.

No, nothing in the world is close to that. In my observation, most cultures are quite picky about the table and cleanliness.

golden boy is right, but to tell the truth when you go around china the eating habits are the least of it. sh--t piled on the sidewalk in a neat row though for days before they burn it and right next to the food stalls. urinating in malls, buses etc. children having a crapping contest at the bus stop (2 boys 2 girls next to their parents) actually this is something i figured out you can always tell if the crap was done by or a dog or a local , because dogs were smart enough to crap where people dont walk think about it
but i'm sure idiots like renachou can make an excuse for all that

and golden boy you are insulting animals, animals dont crap where they eat and sleep
think about that when you see workers sleeping and eating their lunches on the same streets they urinate and crap on

You gotta get over these things if you're gonna live abroad, that's just how it is.

Well you know with 8000 years of culture and history the Chinese will likely tell you that you're wrong, they have proper eating etiquette... YOU have culture shock. YOU have the problem man... You hate China in fact, don't you know? You think you're better than the Chinese because you think you have better table manners... But you're wrong.... 8000 years man.... 8000!! Can you even count that high?? Think about it! 8000...............

Gee, guess I'm in for a shock when I arrive in China, I can't stand noisy eaters, usually 6 year old kids here, As for pooing every where,, My cats use a litter box and bury it, which they like to do if outside. I have 4 acres, my dog goes to the end of the yard to have a crap,, you can see she thinks about for awhile and hunts for the perfect spot.. they seem to think the fate of the universe depends on where they drop a load exactly, but it is away from the house. They also eat quitely. So I'll give critters the vote for better manners.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
