I think it is pretty safe to say that decisions like this are not hastily made and not without irrefutable data.

Scahtz:

I suspect decisions like this are often made for political reasons. There is a lot of evidence in other spheres that the US govvernment often acts on easily refutable "proof." And, it is clear that there is a strong "anti-China" bias in large segments of the US political leadership. A large part of this bias appears to be an attempt to deflect blame for the abysmal failure of the US political systems response to and faiure to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus. The government can (and should) arrest spies if they have evidence. Closing the consulate is a political act -- not a measured response to provable criminal activity.

If political activity detrimental to the host country is a crime justifying closing a consulate (as opposed to arresting or deporting the actual actors) than China should immediatly close the US consulate in Hong Kong. Russia should close all of the US consulates. So should a lot of other countries.

I don't know the real reason the consulate was ordered closed, and I don't know that it wasn't justifiable, but the record of the US government's actions over the last decade or so, the politicalization of every decision, and the lack of transparency in the actions of many US agencies suggests that whatever the government says is a lie.

State Department didn't ask. It ordered closing of the spying den, i.e. Houston's Chinese Embassy.

GOOO .. Trump-ster ...

Trump says ‘always possible’ he’ll shut down more Chinese consulates after Beijing vows retaliation for Houston facility closure

US President Donald Trump said he could shutter additional Chinese consulates following the closure of a diplomatic facility in Texas, leaving the door open for further escalation as tensions soar between the two nations.

The comment came during a White House presser on Wednesday, following the State Department’s decision to order a Chinese consulate in Houston to shut down within 72 hours “in order to protect American intellectual property and Americans,” according to a department spokesperson.

“I guess they were burning documents and burning papers,” Trump said, referring to the Chinese consulate staff.

Beijing has slammed the move as an “unprecedented escalation,” accusing Washington of “harassing Chinese diplomatic and consular staff in the US” while vowing to respond with “firm countermeasures” if the decision is not reversed.

Earlier on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Hua Chunying, said the country’s embassy in Washington, DC had received “bomb and death threats” as a result of “smears and hatred fanned up by the US [government].” She went on to condemn the “erroneous decision” to shutter the Houston consulate, also warning of retaliation from Beijing.

Chinese Embassy in Houston, TX, was shut-down because "It was a spying den ..." according to the statement of US Senator Marco Rubio ...

Do you think, Senator's statement is overblown ...?

 Be careful, now ...

Here is the weblink of US Justice Dept. with over 6000 listed indictments against Chinese citizens.

There are 20 arraignments per page and charges in 2019 begin after page 2 ..., so we have around 40 indictments, most of them against multiple Chinese citizens ... for spying in USA in 2020.

Look up "Wag the Dog" on the internet!

Sandnose:

With due respect, I don't think you understand the idiom fully or have appalling tastes in cinema.

I never suggested it was a good movie -- but I do understand the idiom "the tail wagging the dog" means to try to divert attention away from the real reason for something. What do you think it means?

The Justice Department on Thursday announced charges against Tang and three other scientists living in the U.S., saying they lied about their status as members of China’s People’s Liberation Army. All were charged with visa fraud.

Tang was the last of the four to be arrested, after the justice department accused the Chinese consulate in San Francisco of harboring a known fugitive.

One more "Why ... Houston ..?"

https://news.yahoo.com/anti-communist-protesters-heckle-staff-220913293....

Senior U.S. officials said on Friday that the consulate was one of the worst offenders in terms of Chinese espionage in the United States and linked its staff to China's pursuit of a vaccine for the new coronavirus.

"The vaccine is the latest," he said. "They lie, they take," he said.

Consulate staff had duties in eight southern U.S. states. The building closed for official business earlier in the week.

Houston is a major medical hub known for top-notch research on cancer, infectious diseases and since the pandemic hit this year, vaccines for the coronavirus, which first emerged in China late last year. The city is also home to dozens of oil and gas producers that develop technologies used around the world.

Because the US government is full of idiots elected by 250 million other  idiots.  After living in China off and on for the last 4 years i came to realize that the Chinese Communist Party does a much better job meeting the needs of the people than the US government does. The US should be working with China and the rest of the world to find a viable solution to the virus problem instead of pointing fingers at China. I highly doubt China intended to let lose this pandemic on the world. I am at the point where I want to walk into the nearest US consulate and throw my passport on the table and tell them where they can shove it as I no longer want to be a slave to the US government.

icnif77:

Right ... I might agree with you on comparison between USA & CCP taking care of their people. However, 20-years ago when changes in China started, China was undeveloped country and CCP had loads to do to bring China on normal world's standard. Chinese gov. resettled people from country side into the cities, i.e. Chinese gov. gave them sit-down toilets and electricity, which Americans enjoyed since 1918 ...

Contrary, USA was the most developed country in the world ... 20-years ago.

It is not big deal to renounce US citizenship. Many Americans did it and one of the main reasons were high (capital gain) taxes. Also, gun violence and more ... The problem you're facing is where else to go ... , so I wouldn't talk or write about renouncing until I would have country to move and get new passport.

I have few US friends, who are in Costa Rica and Panama after they returned their passports in order to be exempt from US taxes.

What I can tell you, renouncing is an expensive venture ..., so until you have funds available, your renouncing is just a pipe dream!

I mean, I would also like to have whatever the best, the fastest, the shiniest car in the world ..., butT ...

I was listening earlier Trump-a's interview with Dave Portnoy, day trader, who conducted interview with POTUS as his first interview in his life ...

Trump-a said amongst other things ... "China (CCP) at Covid outbreak closed travelling around/in China, but permitted travelling abroad ...".

This is fact and is not POTUS's private opinion. China also as first country facing with the outbreak, hold on information about virus transmission for 6-days, i.e. human-to-human transmission.

This is vital information, which countries around the world should/must know in order to prevent and contain an outbreak.

China should face (and I hope it will ..) International Court tribunal for such misleading informations and actions ...

Here is the link of Trump-ster some 20' long interview, whoever wants to listen it:

Harvard Prof Charged With False Statements, Failing To Report Income From Wuhan University Of Technology

It is alleged that in 2018 and 2019, Dr. Charles Lieber lied to federal authorities about his involvement in China's Thousand Talents Plan and his affiliation with the Wuhan Institute of Technology...

The United States District Attorney of Massachusetts said yesterday that Lieber, who had already been arrested on January 28, 2020, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston on two counts of making and subscribing a false income tax return and two counts of failing to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts with the Internal Revenue Service. Then, in June 2020, Lieber was indicted on two counts of making false statements to federal authorities.

The DA alleges that Lieber served as the Principal Investigator of the Lieber Research Group at Harvard University, which received more than $15 million in federal research grants between 2008 and 2019. Unbeknownst to his employer, Harvard University, Lieber allegedly became a “Strategic Scientist” at WUT and, later, a contractual participant in China’s Thousand Talents Plan from at least 2012 through 2015.

We reported on Lieber when he was arrested back in January here. We noted the two Chinese nationals he was found to be working with - one a Boston University researcher who was once a lieutenant in the People’s Liberation Army, according to prosecutors, and another who was a cancer researcher who tried to smuggle 21 vials of biological materials in his sock - allegedly.

"Lieber's actions look like an unvarnished attempt at espionage, complete with an extremely seductive monetary reward," we noted at the time.

Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
