Q: Why would a school want a full body shot?

One of the schools my niece is applying to wants a full body picture of her. Why would they ask for that? (I can guess, but I may be wrong). I think the school is in Beijing (that's where she thinks she wants to go).

Never heard of such a request before. So I'm willing to bet that your guess is exactly what they have in mind.

They want to see how fat she is, simple as that. The Chinese bosses want pretty girls to work for them. I hope you don't get angry with me Wink

HugAPanda:

I'm not angry with you.. I'm just playing over protective aunt. I figured that's what it was, tbh, which... if they dont want her chunky - cute - sweet- awesome with children-self... well then.. phuckem. Their loss.

If she's fat honestly it's better for her to just not go to that school. As annoying as it is, it's better to know in advance than to get there and have them be rude and suddenly not accept her (which I have no doubt they'd do). When I apply for tutoring jobs in Shanghai now even if they don't ask for my picture I tell them I'm black. Got too annoyed with showing up for interviews and finding out in person that they don't hire black people. It's disgustingly annoying that they don't want to hire non-Aryans but it's more annoying to waste your time and STILL not be accepted. My opinion at least.

It is even the same with Chinese girls, if they aren't pretty they worry whether or not they will get a job. One of my ex students has a small scar near her eye and she is worried about it. It's the way the Cookie crumbles. As Njord said most foreign woman teachers are quite large anyway so they probably can't be too choosey. I might have some pork belly just to keep my Budda Belly in shape, for lunch!!

many schools are selective purely by looks. they want their students to be attracted to the teachers

I am not fat by American standards (arrived in Ankang a size 10) but everyone here thought I was fat. My personality, however, has won over both students and many staff. If your relative can get her foot into the door of a better school, she will probably be happier, but the prejudice against size in China is overwhelming.

Well paying schools in Beijing can start to get REALLY picky after awhile. I'd say it may not be the best place for a first English teaching job. If she has everything else a school would want (the right ethnicity, education, nationality) then Id say screw em and look for a different school or a different city.

I've lost 40 freakin pounds since I got to this country and people STILL chide me about my weight and tell me my clothes aren't "pretty" enough. They say I'm very pretty in the face, just too bad Im so fat.

Njord:

Most of the Chinese I've met from Beijing and Shanghai were assholes so I wouldn't want to live there personally... They're kind of the "uppity" Chinese, they get all: "we can do like you doing so good things" I suggest a place where they're not so ignorant... Seriously send her to Guangdong or Hainan, she'll thank you for it! As for the remarks against you, bare in mind they only feel better about themselves by knocking others, they're small people, remember that.. they're very tiny, empty, small people... I actually have a superiority complex now that never existed before china!

I think my current job asked me for a full body shot but I never sent them one. Considering that I'm in some some small city, I don't think it matters very much.

Let me see one and I'll tell them if you should send it.

HugAPanda:

A: In my personal experience, teaching certificates have varied in releva
A:In my personal experience, teaching certificates have varied in relevance depending on the context and location. Here's a breakdown of each aspect:a) Getting the teaching job: Teaching certificates can certainly enhance your chances of securing a teaching position, especially in formal educational settings such as schools and language institutions. Many employers prefer candidates who have undergone specific training in pedagogy and instructional techniques, which these certificates often provide. However, other factors such as experience, references, and the demand for teachers in a particular area also play significant roles in the hiring process.b) Getting a higher salary than your uncertified competitors: In some cases, holding a teaching certificate can indeed lead to a higher salary compared to uncertified competitors. Many educational institutions have structured salary scales that take into account factors such as level of education, years of experience, and additional certifications. Holding a teaching certificate may place you in a higher salary bracket or make you eligible for certain salary incentives or bonuses. However, this can vary widely depending on the specific policies of the institution or organization.c) Getting promotions: Teaching certificates can be beneficial for career advancement and securing promotions within the field of education. They demonstrate a commitment to professional development and mastery of teaching skills, which are qualities that many employers value when considering candidates for leadership positions or administrative roles. Additionally, some promotions may require specific certifications or qualifications, making holding a teaching certificate essential for advancement in certain cases.Regarding which certificate yields better results, it largely depends on the specific requirements of the job market and the educational context in which you intend to work. For example:A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is often highly regarded in formal school settings and can be advantageous for those seeking positions in primary or secondary education.Montessori certification is valuable for individuals interested in working in Montessori schools or implementing Montessori principles in their teaching approach.A Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate is particularly relevant for those seeking to teach English to non-native speakers in international contexts or language schools.Ultimately, the best certificate for you will depend on your career goals, the specific requirements of the positions you're interested in, and the preferences of potential employers in your target job market. It's essential to research the requirements and preferences of employers in your desired field and tailor your qualifications accordingly. -- ruqaiya761
