Q: Will the attitude towards drugs in China relax in future?
I've been in a couple of strange situations with people trying to offer me certain drugs in KTVs (most commonly outside of beijing). I know that the laws are very strict now with people going to jail for other people taking drugs in their house etc, also heroin was a huge problem in the nineties (it was taken really casually as it was actually the most readily available drug) but will this change? more and more Chinese people have started going out and drinking, clubbing etc, will they embrace every aspect of partying culture?
I predict increased consumption with an occasional crackdown.
I hope not.
I have seen too many housing estates in the UK turn into no go areas because of drug addiction.

However, I do also hope that the government will come to its senses regarding medicines - stuff that's legal (even if restricted) overseas is harder to get hands on here than there.

but you can buy very strong antibiotics and antidepressants over the counter in China. This is a consequence of the tradition of TCM, which is just green stuff, so not a problem, people are used to self medication and the hospital system is highly corrupt and not that easily accessible. It should be much much harder to get drugs than it is in the US and many other places. Let doctors deal with medicine and not the average Mrs Wang.
A lot of TCM these days is packing a lot of modern pharmaceuticals in any case, so they are not "safe" either.
Do you want it to increase? life is so much healthier and full without drugs.

It's not really a question about what I want (I don't take drugs so this doesn't affect me) but rather what will happen in the future. I think it would be great if no one took drugs but I think the super hard line that countries like America take aren't actually very effective in stopping it. Being very strict on drugs doesn't do anything to tackle the reasons that people take drugs, it just means that people who take them can get thrown into prison for a long time.
It's hypocritical for a culture that promotes drugs like alcohol and tobacco so heavily to make others, especially harmless ones, illegal.
