Q: Will China ever allow foreigners to become Chinese citizens like the rest of the world?

Chinese citizen account for 12% of the world's immigrants in other countries and about one-third of them choose to become foreign citizens. Yet China does not allow foreigners to become Chinese citizens.  Why?

China is not short of people. It has 1.4 billion people. Why would they want anymore? They already have 1.4 billion problems. Besides, unless you are going to invest millions of dollars worth in China, chances are that they will not need you. The closest you can ever get is a permanent residence permit, a D visa or a green card. These are far and few in between anyway.

Your question is making a false assumption : China allows foreigners to become Chinese citizens. However
1) It's not easy to get it
2) Few people ask for it, the benefits of being a Chinese citizen are, hum, thin.

A bit of reading for you

Impossible, the population is too high as it is... China doesn't want to become the next France... I was impressed how France stated on CNN that they have too many foreigners, not enough apartments and not enough jobs.

DrMonkey:

I'm French... I would say some French people are looking for easy scapegoats to blame for all the current main country problems : "foreigners". "foreigners" is a fuzzy definition which includes "easy to distinguish" (Africans) and "harmless" (doing shitty jobs nobody wants, without support group like an union). That's way easier than recognizing past errors and making difficult decisions (we can't afford our social system as it is now, we should share the reduction equally, our political class is long past its expiry date). To top this, 70% French have a grand-parent coming from immigration, so that's hypocritical at best.

Sounds like the same deal we have in the U.S with Mexicans illegally crossing the border and doing the little junk jobs nobody wants, like farming and dish washing.

In Shenzhen alone there are 200000 unfilled factory jobs. Sounds to me like at least there is a couple of hundred thousands missing.

Let me rephrase your question, will "China ever make it easy ....." No and for a very good reason , China has a population problem. Also I am a firm believer that citizenship should not be given away or bought so easily.

Very well typed. (Well siad lol)

Why would any foreigner ever want to become a Chinese citizen? For the pension? nope, for the rights that Chinese people get? Nope. For the ease of visiting other countries? Hahahaha.....no chance with that one!

I plan to live here a very long time but I'd never give up my British Citizenship. Apart from other things I get visa free access (or visa on arrival) to 173 countries (1st in world rankings). Chinese citizens get the same for 44 countries (82nd in world rankings). So why would I bother?

Canada just slammed the brakes on the "BUY YOUR CITIZENSHIP" program and America is still doing with the EB5 investments.  Gow come China doesn't offer the same opportunity?  Seems quite unfair to me.

Grumpy:

China really don't want us in their country in case you have never felt the vibes. Their need for us ended maybe three years ago. They got what they needed from us already. Why the hell should they give us citizenship?
