Well, I don't think that's ever really happened in any country, and I can't see China being the first for any special reason. Don't hold your breath.

What prompted this, by the by?

It could become "more fair" but as kchar said no country has achieved total fairness so far, although some including Australia come close. What China really needs to do is to make their system more transparent so that people can see if things were done fairly or not. It is one of the risks of doing business in China and there have been a few recent examples of Austrlian business people whi have been arested jailed for a long time until their trials and then given lengthy sentences with very little scuitiny by anyone other than the Chinese judiciary. It has even been difficult for the Australian government reps to get access to the trial proceedings and son that just cast aspersions on the result and fairness.
