We're planning on a brief trip to the Matsu Islands in Taiwan during the Golden Week break, possibly for four nights. These islands are a 90 minute ferry crossing from Fuzhou, Fujian Province. We are a family travelling on British passports with China Foreign Resident Permits. Are we likely to encounter any problems in leaving or re-entering China or when renewing our resident permits?

You're worrying too much. It's not like going to Israel & then the nearby Arabic countries.
Nope. You are ok.
A few UK mates of mine do regular business trips to the other China. And they have chinese RPs.
The real hell for you will be golden week in Taiwan, when you discover that 7 million mainland chinese have decided to go at the same time as you
Thinking more, one of my mates lived on the other China, got married to another Chinese, and then moved to this China, with his wife. No problem.... till he went back to the UK.

Wouldn't that be hilarious though???
Talk of "One China"... and then have grief returning to the mainland...
I regularly did the trip to Jinmen Dao (also part of Taiwan, but only 30 min ferry), off Xiamen.. no problems at either end.
