I was transfered to another branch of the same school in another province. They applied for my work permit, but have not yet gone to renew my residence permit. There is something very shady at this school and i want to now leave. Will be going back home. What are the implications of me traveling home on the residence permit from the previous province? Thanks

It would be useful to know the name of this shady institution ...
You can travel out of China from anywhere in China. You will experience problems at the border crossing only if you overstay your Residence permit.
However, when you move to another province, you (your employer) should notify PSB (police) in the city. I am not sure about timing for notifying cops after arrival, but it's short time to do that. I think, you have less than 2-weeks to inform city police about your arrival.

@Stiggs & icnif77 Thanks so much for your replies. I will post the name of the school once i leave. I am currently still with them and wouldn't want things to turn nasty. I also have to go for an operation and they refused to grant me leave, but this, I think, was because i refused to go substitute at another of their schools as it is illegal ("we will protect you" they said...), so I will be leaving soon. I have reported arrival at the police within 24hrs of arrival so on that front I am clear. Thanks again so very much.

Like Icnif said, as long as your RP is not expired (or cancelled) you should have no problem leaving.
As far as your old RP being cancelled goes... not sure, but I wouldn't think so,generally your old one is good until your new one is ready and as long as the application is in the system you're regarded as having a visa.
I can see potential the for problems and stress at the airport though if your RP has expired. Technically you're still ok but the airport staff would probably still want to take you to the office to sort it out and could mean a missed flight.
