Q: Will you leave your Chinese smart phone in China?

US military personnel have been told to ditch their Chinese smart phones because of the fear they are being monitored.
After seeing what is happening in China I would say well founded.
Your phone can be turned into a listing device remotely and you would never know.

All phones can do this. People put those Alexa things in their house that listen to every word you say. And it’s only going to get worst all over the world. I’ve just come to to the realizations that if I’m going to own a cell phone or computer or smart tv or Fitbit ect ect ect.... they can listen to and find me whenever they want....the other option is not owning these things .

iWolf:

True words. If you own any device that can be connected to the internet or phone network then there is no way you can avoid losing your privacy in some way. FFS even my fridge, hotwater system and oven are connected. What anyone could get from those, i have no idea but I'm sure the data is useful to someone. This is the price of living in the modern world. If someone wants to hack my phone, email, or computer they are going to be mighty disappointed and bored. Perhaps that is the best protection....be dull. I have no trouble doing that...lol

I suppose the frequency of fridge door opening v freezer door opening could be useful to a retailer looking for a location to open a frozen goods store. Not that China has them. Oven operating times can be sold to energy companies wanting to predict surges.

I sometimes get paranoid thinking there are hidden cameras in my apt.  Oh well, if they have nothing better to do than see me making The Two-Back Monster, then I guess just tell 'em to enjoy the show.

Someone on this forum should test if phone monitoring is real or not.  Have long, made up conversations regarding the 3 T's.   Then let us know if the Gestapo drops by for a visit.

ScotsAlan:

The gps tracking watch I got for my daughter has a listening function. I would only use it in an emergengy. A major emergency. Privacy is number one. The tracking watch is security. But I have a uk mate who installed a tracking app on his gfs phone. That is plain wrong. But at the same time, she fitted cams in the bar he built for her. A wee red led flashes when she is using her phone to check on what he is doing. What a mad paranoid world.

On Amaps, the algorithm can detect traffic jams easily. Triangulate direction and speed over time, if speed goes to zero after sustained movement, easy to work out where the jams are. We cant opt out of this.

If you, and a hundred of your neighbours go to a starbucks 5 miles away and use your wechat to pay for your latte, expect a new starbucks to open in your neighbourhood.

I find windows ten pretty bad. Our company is upgrading to windows 10, and now I find if I open bing at work it is displaying adverts based on what I was binging the night before on my phone.

Its good and bad. Service providors can pinpoint where the service is required.

But bad. I was oinvited to join a wechat group but was refused entry cos my wechat is not linked to my bank. Being linked to my passport is not good enough.

The drinks machine at work is also phone pay only.

And now the busses in GZ is rapidly going to phone pay.

That data is worth a fortune.

Imagine if a data center dude had a burgler mate.

We live in sci fi now.

Even the democracies are monitoring us. We in the west like to think we are free. With the tech these days, even a 5th grader can become a security expert.
