Q: Will you stay in China if China goes to war?

I'm from the USA and you can bet your bippy I'll be on the first plane out of here the instant any Chinese or Japanese are killed, as that would be an act of war.

I've seen what war can do, heck I'm from the USA and we're always in a war.. It's always soldiers go out and bodies come back.  Innocent people can so easily be caught in the conflict and killed.

If China goes to war, I'm certain Russia would join China's side.. If it's a war against Japan, then the USA would be forced to join Japan's side as part of Japan's demilitarization agreements after World War 2. In order to get Japan to demilitarize, the USA had agreed to defend Japan against all attacks because Japan doesn't have an Army / Navy / Air Force / etc  anymore.

Anybody else ready to leave at the first sign of war?

You'd have to be crazy to stay if it came to that!

I'm curious, though: "I'm certain Russia would join China's side". Why? Surely Russia would not go to war with the US for the sake of China. I'm sure you're right about the US intervening on behalf of Japan, though.

I am pretty sure Russia will sit this one out.

Yeah, me too Raf.

It's sensible to expect the US would intervene in a China-Japan conflict - you'd be obliged to on more than one level - but Russia? Not even when they were Cold War community buddy buddies would I have expected Russia to put herself on the line for China.

Should also point out - I'd be stunned if they actually went to war!

Edit: i should have written "would" instead of "will" as I do not believe it will come to war.

I would be shocked if it did come to war as well.

Never!. Oh well, because I am Chinese. Now I see, that's why the US always stands by Japan's side at the islands problem.

nevermind:

Yeah, strange no one in authority ever explained that before and just told you to hate the US

sokie you seem like an intelligent young lady. look up the first sino japanese war and the treaty of shimonoski ( 马关条约)

ask yourself this question who did japan surrender to?  who did japan sign a peace treaty with? the treaty of shimonselki also granted korea their independence. china claim is that the treaty of shimonoseki was nullified becoz china defeated japan. if that were true korea would revert back to china. but do the research yourself. and get back to me. and sokie and maggie welcome aboard . we are glad to have real chinese people who do not try to hide the fact that they are chinese. we will disagree on some issues but please do not take it personally

oh and by the way. america knows first hand that the islands belong to japan. usa to control of the islands from the japanese towards the end of ww2 and returned it back to them after 1970. taiwan has a legitimate claim because they signed a peace deal with japan in 1972 but they are disputing the language of the treaty.

Japan doesn't have an Army / Navy / Air Force, but it has JSDF
(Japan Self Defense Force).

Japan does have an army, navy and so on...but you would still back
them I believe because you hope to have some say in the oil and other things there

brisguy:

It is correct Japan does not have an army, navy, or air force. When WW2 finished Japan agreed to never deploy or use force against any country abroad. The only way Japan can fight back is if it is attacked and then the Japan Self Defence Force will defend the country.

this is from Wikipedia:

The Japan Self-Defense Forces (自衛隊, Jieitai?), or JSDF, occasionally referred to as JSF or SDF,
are the unified military forces of Japan that were established after the end of the post–World War II Allied occupation of Japan.
For most of the postwar period the JSDF was confined to the islands of Japan and not permitted to be deployed abroad.
In recent years they have been engaged in international peacekeeping operations.[7]
Thus the JSDF is being used around the globe in "peace keeping" much like UK and USA forces.

GuilinRaf:

China sends Peacekeepers too, though they are usually Police officers. Not just the US and the UK.

Dont forget, China also has sent military ships to help combat the Somali Pirates.

sweety china is the worlds 2nd or 3rd largest military. stop trying to act as if china is being bully. they are the ones bullying their neighbors, trying too steal their land and territorial waters. north korea, vietnam, the phils. google china's claims and lookk at that map. ask yourself if that is even logical.

This won't come to a war, the economics of such an action would sink both countries into recession for years. It's just not on the table, despite all the idiotic Chinese jingoism going on in state media.

Like any other powerful members of the international community (and especially if you want to be seen as such) the channels of diplomacy will move to the UN where a deal will be worked out ... eventually. If/when that happens it will be seen that China's claim to the disputed islands is the least historical: in modern times they were considered Japanese by the US occupying forces after WWII, claimed by Taiwan upon their independence and not even on the map for the PRC until the 1970s.  Frankly, China's position on this one is impossible to support -- it's an issue for Taiwan and Japan to sort out. Both being sensible places, I believe the best option would be to go into partnership in exploration for natural resources.  That really would solve the issue, assuming China is big enough to admit that it's wrong.

yian you are right in saying this is between taiwan and japan but china has painted themselves into a corner. they are going to lose a lot of face with their people. their aircraft carrier can't even land/takeoff jets but they are touting it as technologically advanced. and it's a refurbed russian ship. china is gonna end up with a lot of egg on their face.

I don't think there will be a war between China and Japan,at least in the next ten or twenty years .China needs a peaceful environment to develop and Japan relies too much on China. In addition, politicians in both countries don't really want to get into a war.

Firstly, no way is this going to come to war.

However, if China does go to war, as in most modern wars, unless you are unlucky enough to be in the war zone (think the former Yugoslavia) then there is little chance of getting swept up in it all. So if possible I would stay. Of course my wishes may not correspond with those of a war time Chinese government, and obviously that would have a huge impact on my decision.

Funny how when a Chinese person loves his / her country they are supporting a 'corrupt mafia scum' but when an American loves his / her country he / she is being patriotic and fighting for freedom and democracy.

GuilinRaf, Thanks for the information. However as to the fighting for democracy bit, I heard that repeatedly first hand when I had reason to work with the American military a few years ago. i.e. with the military themselves. Hardly extreme right wing.

Ok, got it.

Most non-military Americans that I know consider words like "patriotic" or "freedom fighter" as a punch line or indication of what I mentioned above.

EDIT: I am not saying you are wrong, just what different sectors of the US say in regard to the above sentiments (Military, Right Wing, and Others).

I'll become a Canadian peace keeper, I'll round up all the women I can and make a safety zone. I'll pasture my herd at the Flying tigers former base in Guilin. I'll guard them well and keep them warm at night. How many women in Guilin? I want them all, the short, the fat and the tall.

If there was ever a war between China and America while I lived in China. Yes I would leave.

That's pretty highly unlikely though. And the odds of a China/Japan war seem pretty unlikely right now too.  Like others mentioned, it's economic suicide for both countries.

America/China/Japan all relay on eachother pretty heavily economically so a war happening is pretty unlikely. At least right now under current circumstances it's very unlikely.
