Q: Will your website designer ask you to look for websites for designing reference?
I mean the designer askes me to look for websites I like for his designing reference.I wonder why should I?
Because he is a typical Chinese copycat, no creativity of his own and he copies other ideas from other companies to use for his customers.
My competitor uses uses bells and whistles, so we should too, being creatively different is not an option when you can't create.
If he told you he created a great web site that many people copied because his was very good, then you might have a winner, if it's true. By the way, your standard for a website, the customer can use the site, order, contact, and procure better and easier than your competitors in the same business. That is all that matters and know your customer, will the site be used by a manager or his secretary/mistress or the warehouse manager or his slave workers, who will actually be touching the keyboard to communicate with you. He isn't a chinese designer actually, I do not want a chinese designer for my website because my audience(customers) aren't from China. My main market is in North America and Europe.
I am not really comfortable with he telling me to find those websites as his designing reference.
I want something good, not a copy.
I want a nice website, have the main page for marketing and one page for online shopping.
I would only tell the designer the purpose of my website and leave all the creation job to the designer first. If I tell him all the detailed idea in my mind, it will kill his creation. I want him to have all the space for creating something good. If you leave the designer al the space, he may design something better than I could think of. After he present what he created, then I could offer some idea for some modification.
Oh well, I want to keep interviewing designers till I find the right one.
That guy is busy with his other job and not really try to invest much time to create my website.
I may have two other orders come, I think I will need my website to be launched this year, I want to set up a good website, build more good supply chains and get more orders of my business before this December.

The chinese company now I still work on has a crappy website even among chinese companies. All the shitty pictures and some theme on the website looks like celebrating a chinese spring festival, just look very foolish and ridiculous. The business owner is a fool and doesn't realize the problem even after I mentioned it directly.
And he asked a graphic designer has no idea of website designing for the design of the company website. Just crappy and foolish as hell.
He doesn't even has enough samples for what he is selling. Just foolish as fuck.
I always make sure I can get samples for what I promote.

I do not want to have anything to do with this company after I left, not even want this company to be my supplier based on the false promise about the lead time.I sourced some model products for my own business, my main supplier is good, fast and efficient on delivering my production.I brought and saved samples from my order production. I can have a fast delivery for sample and I can have some nice looking samples for taking them to do photo shooting in professional phtograpy company. I will launch website and will hire some talent for media marketing when I made more. I will hire designer for designing my product catalogue so I can show customers in exhibition next time:) Most of my suppliers have shop on alibaba, so instead I will try to get most of my customers from fairs out of China.

Why not? A picture is worth a thousand words and if you have an idea in mind it's better to show the designer than try to describe it.

He probably doesn't want to spend a lot of time on it then have to start again, guessing what it is you're looking for because what he did the first time isn't what you had in mind. That would be very expensive for you too.
I don't know anything about website design but would you expect to walk into a dressmakers shop for example and ask them to make you a wedding dress without them asking what sort of style you're looking for? They wouldn't spend hours making the dress just for you to look at it and say...meh, I don't really like that style, can you make something else and show me that? Or if you did you'd need to pay for their time you wasted.
Why would website designers be any different?

I fully agree what trump said in art of the deal, leave the designer space before giving your opinion.
The designer may design soemthing I can not even think of and better than I could think of.
You can not hire a designer and tell him everything in your mind and make him like a foolish copy cat. You may think you have great idea, but maybe the designer can come up even better ideas. If you tell it first, you may kill a better idea. Don't you get the point?

You're going to ask someone to build something for you, but you won't tell him what you want him to build, you don't even know what you want him to build and you refuse to give him any idea of what you think is good or bad in a website.
Everyone has different tastes and different needs - what one person thinks is great another will think is crap, so he has to spend a lot of his valuable time trying to GUESS what you want and if it's something you don't like you probably won't pay him and he will have wasted his valuable time. He should have been working on a job for someone who knows what they want.
He's asking you to at least give him an idea of what you want so you don't end up wasting his time and money. Why would any decent designer waste their time with you when there are plenty of clients who won't waste their time out there? Do you get my point?

K.I.S.S. - keep it simple stupid is an extremely well known piece of advice that can be applied to each and every aspect of work and life.

Vicki, KISS is a pretty common thing to see in places like training courses, it wouldn't be out of place in a conference.
And iWolf is right, simple and functional is good, crowded and irritating to use is not and that's a complaint a lot of people have with Chinese websites.

Yes i have and will say KISS a conference or meeting. It's not offensive to anyone and conveys a simple idea practically. It's no biggie that Vicky thinks every comment i make is a personal attack rather than simple truth.
Designers do indeed ask you for references...not to copy (hopefully) but to see what you think is good vs. what you do not like.
Leaving a client to fully articulate what he/she wants is the same as asking them to describe a new color.

Maybe you are right too. I was thinking differently. But that designer doesn't even get started for designing my website. lol I want a website to be launched shortly. I do not even have anything to show my clients. I'm confirming if he he can make it. Otherwise I think I will need to find another designer who's available for the job.
