Taking a dump on airplanes/storefronts, bathing in sinks, etc. What is going on?
Because the majority of Chinese people from the mainland refuse to accept social conventions and etiquette that are regarded as the norm in most other developed countries.
The overwhelming majority of foreign nationals have at least some consideration as to how their behaviour affects others. Regretfully, the overwhelming majority of Chinese are only concerned about themself.
talkword:
So (adults) defecating in public and washing your kid in a public toilet's sink is not considered bad etiquette in the mainland? I have never seen behavior like that here.

the cultured refined intelligent patrons of china were killed during the cultural revolution, so the peasants were given the keys to power and education without any background in managing the complex daily needs of a society and social norms of behavior, imagine putting cavemen in bill gates house and let them run everything. then try and correct the problems and catch up to the rest of the world. this in a nutshell is what happened. they got nuclear weapons and modern technology and they still think a window should be open for fresh air when its minus 20, another example in a chairman mao unofficial biography says he never brushed his teeth for 28 years the bodyguard knew him, i call it the "peasant mentality", some would call it the victim mentality, chinese people are like the 8 yr old boy who tells you he hates girls, and you just smile and shake your head. they dont know any better and sadly the government never really cared it they do until they started causing international loss of face embarrassment. would make a great sad alleghory, but im to ambivalent to think about it. STILL, it would be interesting to take a country like america or any developed country and get rid of the landlords, teachers, doctors, and start over the society with the poor and middle class taking the reigns of power, never mind they did that in egypt 4 years ago, worked out very well, cant read nothing but the koran, doctors and teachers of anything else are infidels. one day they will tear down the pyramids, not a humanities type of guy, my head hurts, time for another godfather drink. i have stated my amazement that we are allowed in china to see this behavior, but perhaps we are here as a sinister plot of the ccp to show a good role model and example for the average citizen but i dont think they would waste the time for such a progressive gesture of concern.

Without saying something negative explain something negative.
blellow:
I think Kaiwen did a good job. You can be negative without being racist
Lord_hanson:
I don't think anyone would be racist anyway. That is my point. I doubt anyone hear thinks that Chinese Americans, Taiwanese or Hong Kongers are bad tourists.
Because, they've never been outside of China, and they behave same as in China.
Most of Chinese, who can afford trip elsewhere are well suited in China. They don't consider themselves as 'ordinary' anywhere, in China or outside of China.
chinese society is a rigid hierarchy ladder where nobody is equal. tourists with a bit of money assume themselves to be better than others. And even if they're not, they feel they should show Foreignland who's boss. Something about a century of humiliation.
Also, international plane tickets are, like, nearly twice as expensive in Chinese-language websites. I fully support it, otherwise every nong would be burning up valuable kerosine. Unfortunately, international travels remain somewhat of a bragging rite, despite the gov't's best efforts. I was often approached by strangers who just wanted to show off their holiday snaps in Thailand, South Africa or USA.
The few chinese who do travel as non-shopping-spree tourists, are often jumped up farmers out to impress their mistress. And nothing impresses more than a rude asshole, because being rude means you're powerful. Being powerful means you have money. Having money means you're a good man.
The simplistic reasoning overlooks the fact that having money without necessary social skills to hold onto it spells: "diminishing returns". But China has very much a short-term gains culture: What can you do for me now, to hell with the consequences, and let's assume everything to stay as it is forever.
Also, since nobody speaks up about injustices in China, assholes literally face no consequences. Their assholery may actually be sustainable in their microcosm, as long as the environment remains. But if people ever get organized and confident, the ruling class will be torn apart. Unless they can deflect blame towards foreigners, of course.
I have lived and visited many SE Asian, and East Asian nations. China is, by far...way out there. Even nationals from say Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines simply "dont get them"either. So alas, dont fret! We are not alone in the overall consensus that the Chinese are in a "league of their own" (in a negative way most of the time).
As an example, would you as an owner of a B&B or homestay, want a Chinese family to rent a room with connecting bath, only to have them keep the windows wide open and have the A/C running full blast ?! Would you not be leary of ever renting to Chinese again simply do to the higher costs and stresses involved? Only the naive, or an idiot would deal with Chinese tourists on a daily basis.
Lastly, the generalized opinion about the Chinese is they are cheap, noisy, pushy, arrogant, and plain hard to deal with.
Things I have seen while traveling with and around Chinese
i don't understand why anyone would think the are uncivilized and unable to function outside of China in any rational or with any common sense.
- sleeping on floor of plane between seats
- spend 5 minutes trying to open bathroom door of plane , then reach up to latch that actually takes door off , then stop after a moment of rational thought
- opening up hatches on the plane for no apparent reason
- spend 5 minutes trying to plug headphones into plane to listen to movie
- spend 5 minutes trying to open packaging of food on plane
- hammering the touch screen display endlessly until it locks up
- totally destroying the bathroom on the plane
- walking in socks to said destroyed bathroom that has more piss on the floor than a men's toilet in China and not hesitating to go in
- spitting on floor of plane
- taking kid out of restaurant to piss against the wall in main hallway of shopping mall
- taking of hospital waiting room to piss in stairwell, with toilet clearly available and in view
- pulling over the Mercedes so they can hold baby out the door for a dump
- family sleeping in Starbucks, they were asleep when I arrived and still sleeping 2 hours later , this in Shanghai
- toilet not flushing for two years and instead of rearing , using buckets of water to flush
- tap leaking in bathroom for two take a plastic pipe from tap to fill buckets in bathroom , used for above
- leaving house for a week with windows open and food easily available and then not understanding why there is a rat in the house
- can air condition buildings to sub zero temps in summer but have not figured out basic heating
and nd all this in public so can just imagine what goes on in private
makes me laugh out loud all of it , like a bad B movie
ambivalentmace:
mr. doug, that is a typical day in china, so what happened the other 364 days of the year after you got off the plane and checked on the apartment.
