No reply from the old school. They're not even answering their phones. Can't really afford a trip back to that city. What do I do? ((((

Well, that could me they have shut their doors.
1.) The most logical thing to do, and I hope you accept this, start from scratch. Without it, you will require to exit China, Tianjin, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen all require you to go back to your home country for the process to start over again. Other cities have been cleared to go to Hong Kong. If you were smart, you saved at least 60,000 rmb in a year to help with anything that COULD COME UP.
2.) Hire an agency to help you, another reason to save money, for what you will need thay can do but man it's going to be at least 9 to 12,000 rmb.
3.) Find a way to get back to the city, it could be your cheapest route. If the school is open, then they are required by law to give a release letter, you also need a copy of your cancelled foreign expert certificate. If you left on good terms, this should be easy, if they are a shaddy school, well this could be a problem. A little red envelope to the Foreign Affairs personnel will get it done quickly.
4.) Give me the name of your school and I'll check some websites my PT company uses to find discreditable Language Mills and Schools licensed to hire foreigners. That being said, although we see alot of people call us for this problem, honestly, there's not alot you can do about it, and if you tried, you probably would succeed, it's still going to cost you around 20,000 rmb.
5.) Please save money people. I hate seeing these things happen. We must help each other out for most of the Chinese aren't. A little money goes a long way here.

apply to schools in a small city they have ways around the law. but keep your hands clean. focus on the autonomous regions they have more flexiblity
I think you can make a new passport and just get the new visa in that, they only look at the Passport number when making you Z visa...if you are doing it in another city i think it should be ok....you can make a new passport (probably a lot easier than in your home country) just go to your embassy if you need an excuse make your passport wet/water damaged...
