my wife is baking bread... in a mini oven that she had no use for 'til now. In the past, if it doesn't come from a "wok" then what is it? only I used it.
she is looking up pizza recipes, she is learning how to use a new "tool".
I'm going to buy a big oven!!! and maybe far less oil and grease in the future. (suggestions? tao bao 300-1000)
a little thing in my life, but it is a huge thing in China life. she worries about the electricity bill, not the gas bill.
I think we need more infiltration into this society, more foreigners to come and educate the men and women, of the rural Chinese society, about more new fangled things than the iPhone, and we chat.
beware Xi, we are coming.
Life without an oven is not possible is it.... I mean, how the heck would you make buns for home made burgers ? How would you make cookies that are eatable instead of the crap you get in supermarkets.... and how would you dry your underwear on a very humid day. (haven't actually done that, but I have made some excellent oven-dried tomatoes as I couldn't find proper dried tomatoes in the supermarkets... again for home made burgers)
OVENS RULE
Hotwater:
Best place to find sun-dried tomatoes would be an import food store. Definitely got them in GZ you must have an import store in zhuhai?
I had to laugh at your underwear comment. Many years ago I had a friend stay with me for a few months as he'd been made homeless. He was a clever guy but also a bit dim (no common sense). He'd run out of clean underwear one day so hand washed a pair. He needed them dry quickly so when I came home one day from work I found him drying them under the grill of my oven!
My wifes stupid little oven packed in this week. She also bakes bread etc, but I know the secret. A good solid oven. I had a look on taobao but could not find one. I mentioned to my wife tonight that I had been looking.... her response..... "You need to buy me a real house before you buy me a real oven". Chinese logic? We have a 100 sm apartment. Now she wants a traditional house, or a villa, because a real oven needs to be on the ground and not in the sky.
mike695ca:
Hahaha my wife is the same. An apartment is now not good enough. We should buy a villa. Yeah no problem, 20 million coming right up!
pretty sure our girls are conniving against us .. &r, I suspect.
won't be no house or car bought from my bank account, she better start saving.
BHGAL:
you read it? I thought it got to be a little personal, I guess ..delete delete
There are many Western name brand ovens on Taobao. I mean full size built in ovens like at home. I forgot how much i paid for mine, but it was in the order of 3k delivered. The wife discovered the world of baking and I am so happy.
ScotsAlan:
link? We just done our 5 year book anniversary. I need to buy her an oven.....

So... our wifes are master bakers. Their equipment is not the best... but they make do.
BHGAL:
I like that they communicate ... suggest it is odd for Chinese to do that, other than family or classmates.
all good
My wife just got into baking and cooking too using an electrical oven. She was really excited to learn how to cook food from different countries and started posting it on WeChat. Then all her Chinese friends and family go ape-shit and want to come over and try it.
That was a very "social" week.
She bought the oven off Taobao for like 250 RMB. It has been working very well.
Some brand called Galanz

I've had a small oven on my bench for about 2 years now - though I use it for roasts and grills, not cookies or bread.
Only cost about 400, and is the size of a large microwave (or maybe a bit bigger than that). Does the job, and would also do bread.
royceH:
I've got one on my bench too. Actually it sits on top of the microwave, not on the bench.
Cost about Y350 from Taobao.
I don't do anything with it. Oh, some Uyghir bread with tomato and plastic cheese once or twice.
Though I often think I should put it to use. Yeah, gunna start next week...
