Q: Women's working fashion in China?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I still want to ask: Why do I see women in the work place wearing things that I think others would think totally inappropriate: I.E. booty shorts with 6 inch heels.  Is it just me or does this happen a lot?  I thought China was more conservative?

One of my biggest hates in China is the work dress. Girls coming to work with short shorts or mini skirts and wearing sneakers. Men wearing a shirt and jeans or the tackiest polo shirts.

Great you want to feel comfortable when you are walking in the heat or to keep cool in the heat. But you are in a office look professional and look the part.

I just put this down to TIC ('this is China') and people are different. However, the private college I work at now while not publicising any rules appears to have told the front desk girls to dress how 'westerners' would call 'appropriately'.
I've only noticed as I'm in the habit of arriving at work early and I often see the receptionists coming to work, often in short shorts, micro mini skirts etc, but by the time they are at the reception desk working they are dressed more conservatively, i.e. tailored shorts, normal mini skirts etc. Of course the office staff and teachers who aren't teaching dress however they see fit.

this is everywhere in china, because they do not know what kind of clothes suits for what kind of environment. you can see some girls or women wearing night party dress at daytime and maybe in an office or shopping mall. short skirt, high-heeled shoes travelling. for them, doesnt matter it is good or not, as long as they think they are hot or sexy. haha

The woman who helped me get my paycheck was wearing a see through lace shirt the last time I saw her. If that's not inappropriate at the office, what is?

I'm home, never see any women wear anything other than casual wear to office, even in the court house, women dress like they are going to the cottage.

The concepts of vulgar and inappropriate still need to be adopted by Chinese culture, if ever.

I found many women, even if dressed with night gowns and super high heels, incredibly beautiful and attractive. They have an amazing body shape and stunning legs so why not showing them. Of course there are environments where you should be more conservative. But it seems also that Chinese man are kind of used to it so it does not bother them that very much. I guess!!!

On the other hand, there are women who exaggerate and I think because they never check themselves in the mirror before going out. Once I've seen a granny dressed with jeans cutoffs, high heels and a top tank. Still cannot delete that picture from my mind! Incredibly creepy!

I think many people here (myself included), are in danger of making a common mistake, (in my opinion of course), namely projecting your morals, or those of your country, onto another culture.

If the Chinese see nothing inappropriate or vulgar about wearing micro minis or short shorts or other forms of dress to the office, who are we the visitors, to say they are wrong? Of course we can say we don't like it, that's different, but so long as they are conforming to THEIR morals or the rules of their company then that has to be fine.

Of course if a Chinese national (or several) come here and say, yes it's wrong, I will change my opinion. Of course I will still enjoy the view.
