Q: Wooden chopsticks in restaurants - safe to use?

I've had more than one Chinese warn me about staying away from the wooden disposable chopsticks you find in cheaper restaurants, saying they were dangerous. Anyone know what they were referring to, exactly, and if they're safe to use?

Do people really go to restaurants carrying their own chopsticks?

The ones sealed in plastic, that you have to snap in half to use? I've always assumed they were the safest and have always seen Chinese people use those ones before any other type.

My GF is a health nut, she see the possibility of getting some infection everywhere.  At her advise, I bought sometime back a pair of metal chopsticks that are portable, they break in half (have a screw and thread connection) and are stored in a small metal tube the size off a marker, that you can carry in your pocket.  This is what she uses at all restaurants we go to.  Not too long ago, I saw at a store the same thing, but it included a small fork, spoon and knife besides the chopstick.  I bought one, about 20 Rmb, and that is the one I use outside my home.

My GF is always talking about getting hepatitis, or many other infections if not careful.  She is so paranoid about it that she will not use a glass or tea cup in any restaurant, and I kid her about bringing a small cup so she can have tea.  She does drink fruit juices from the bottle with a straw taken from her purse.

This is probably what they were referring to: http://www.chinasmack.com/2012/stories/manufacturing-of-poisonous-disposable-chopsticks-exposed.html

I don't know, I almost always use the chopsticks they have there, the reusable ones that they wash. I know, I guess that's kind of gross, but it's what everyone else does.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
