Q: Is Wordpress blocked?

My site is hosted on wordpress.com and my Chinese friends in Guangzhou are unable to see it for some reason. I've run some connection tests and they all said that my site was available in China but they keep getting messages saying my site is unavailable. Is the internet being too slow or is it something else?

I've tried accessing other websites also using wordpress and they haven't been working/working incredibly slowly. My guess it's not just you.

I know a few teachers in China who are using wordpress to blog their experience. They say sometimes its blocked or not accessible and other times it works fine. I wonder if it would be more consistent with a vpn. Do your friends use vpns?

Most of them have to use their phones. Can't really get a bangin' computer when you make 2000rmb a month.

I have 20 domains registered and hosted through Wordpress. Seventeen I have little problem with. Three seem to be blocked everywhere in China. Two I can understand, as one is about law reform and the other about politics. But the third is about Rugby Union. Maybe I shouldn't have written an article about the Queensland Reds playing a dirty game...

Of the others, a few seem to be blocked in some parts of China, or even at different university campuses within the same city, which leads me to suspect there may be localised blocking as well central blocking.

Also, the blocking seems to change constantly. I can access some sites some days, but not on other days. Google have a webpage to keep updates about which of it's services are blocked at any given point in time. Domains bought through Google are blocked.

I've not had a problem with accessing my Wordpress, neither with VPN use or riding the Chinese internet bareback. But there are occasions when you can access something one minute then no the next. Indiscriminate blocking I guess. Dunno.
