Q: Work permit/foreign expert licence/Z visa only issued if working for mainland entity on mainland?
Question as the title. Z visa is a "work" visa, but would "employment" visa be more accurate? In other words it is the visa you get if you are employed by a Chinese company, WFOE, or R.O that are situated on the mainland; and through that you would apply for a residence permit.
What if I am working for a Hong Kong company who does not have an office on the mainland? In other words, I would be working from home on the mainland and maybe working one day per week in the Hong Kong office. How does this work? Would I still need to apply for a Z visa/Work permit/foreign expert licence?
I am interested to know what the position is legally speaking. I know I could just be on an F visa and work without paying taxes etc., with no problems, but that is illegal and may come back to haunt me in the future when I apply for something else.
Since my work would be carried out on the mainland, I would be liable to pay IIT here. That is fine, I just want to know if I would also need a Z visa? Assuming I had a multi entry F visa or L visa or a residence permit through marriage.

I am not totally sure so dont take my answer for granted, but I think if your company does not have any legal registration in Mainland China, you are not able to apply for a Z visa, neither for an F visa (because u would need a company 'inviting' u to visit or work for them in China). So without a legal working Visa you would then be working illegally and not paying taxes.
L Visa through marriage does not help you at all. Still u r not allowed to work.
