Q: Work Visa to Tourist Visa

Yea, that's working visa to tourist visa. Basically, my working visa will expire but I still want to travel afterwards for a few weeks or so. I wouldn't need to leave the country right?

You should be able to go to your local visa office and apply for a tourist visa.  You will need to show that you have enough money to live in China for the length of your visa.  This amount is normally around 20,000RMB for a 6 month visa.  But that can vary depending on the city, who you talk to and whether or not they had coffee yet that morning.
