Q: Working on the side?

I know that technically we are only supposed to work for the person who holds our work permit. But I think just about everyone gets side gigs even if its just for private torturing.

How strict is your boss about getting outside work? How sneeky do you have to be about it? Do you let people know you arent on the right visa for the work you are doing?

Your boss will act as if it the end of the world. Don't talk to him about it. Just find a job and do it. Your boss will be blissfully ignorant and this will help him to be happy. If he finds out just play it down so he doesn't,t have a heart attack or do as the Chinese and lie to him.

If it is private tuition there shouldn't be too much of a problem, but if you are doing extra work in a training school you could be busted by the local PSB. It is illegal to work for another organisation according to the rules of your residence permit Your boss might not be happy when you get deported! Also he can be fined and loose his foreign experts certificate.
Just don't advertise it, but unfortunately in the city where I work everyone knows someone!

It's awfully hard to resist the temptations offered to tutor privately (you wrote "torture" not "tutor", Freudian slip?). If you have the time it can't hurt and like the above said, don't let it be known around the place. A little extra pocket money never hurt and private tutoring is good skills practice.
If you did mean torture then between consenting adults I believe it's ok!!

I like doing English parties. And I write for websites on the side. Message me if anyone's interested. $25 dollars minimum for a 250-500 word article. Cool

Seriously though. I get many offers from Chinese people to just come to a social gathering, usually in some meeting area or a park, and they pay me a decent amount of money to just socialize in English. It's usually pretty enjoyable. =D

Sounds like my kind of party! An english party doesn't sound like the worst. Especially if they feed you too! :)

A buddy of mine, German guy, works in his mother-in-law's ginseng stall in Hong Kong. Since it's owned by his wife's family I guess the school can't really do anything about it since he's not being paid in cash.
