Something like the Glastonbury festival, many bands over 2-4 days, open air concert, people staying in tents on the festival area etc.
Would anyone (of the locals) want to go to such an event ?
Well... there are rock festivals. Quite a lot, too, surprisingly.
Every year I would go to the Midi festival, which is apparently the biggest in all of China, right outside Beijing, or sometimes inside. People from all over China gather, drink, listen to music, camp, and all that. It's awesome. To me it's the rocking beginning of the best time of the year: summer. And it lasts 3 days, if I remember correctly.
Then there's the other festivals, like the Strawberry fest, or the sky fest, which usually contain a different genre of music.
And yes, there is a LOT of people. Especially when Brain Failure's around.
I've never been to one in China, but it seems there are several to choose from: http://www.echinacities.com/expat-corner/2013-China-Music-Festival-Guide-May-June-Get-Ready-to-Rock
And I will also freely admit I have never heard of one single band/artist listed in that article.
