Q: Would you get in the car with a drunk driver ?

If someone offers you a ride home from a social event, do you question if they have had alcohol or other substances that might impair their driving skills ?

I've walked home a couple of times "because I felt like some 'fresh' air" because people around me think I cannot question the sobriety of others.

If the guy seems like he can walk and talk without issue... then I don't mind. China is China... even if they haven't drank anything... they still drive like they are drunk lol.

No I didn't ever, 'cause I was always the driver in charge after the party. I wasn't necessary owner of the car most of the time. I could handle the alcohol the best of everybody involved.

I'm not sure, if that classifies as 'designated driver'. We were 'stoopit', when young.

to me, its never a bad thing to use your best judgement...regardless of what others think or say. As the movie with alec baldin, and that fella from silence of the lambs (cant think of him name at the moment). "People often die from shame". meaning, they didnt think things through, and it caused their premature death. continue to be wise my friend, no harm in it.

anthony hopkins is the other actor. dont know the movie though, but it was real good and involed a bear that was trying to kill and eat them...

I do remember hopkins makign that comment. I think the then designed the complex pit fall bear trap with the spikes at the bottom.  I also remember that bear tearing into the already wounded african american fella, b/c he smelled his blood. The scene was done well...quite graphic. Sure had my young nephews on their toes, heh.

Hopkins is very thoughtful in most of his roles. I was checking out his other movies yesterday. I like 'Lambs' and 'Fracture', where he makes fun of the Law. I like 'Law' and (making) 'fun' (of it).

'We lue the bear' (with cloth soaked with H. own blood).

Back to the alcoholism: 'I rarely drink, and I don't own a car. Now in China, I walked out of the Hospital in Jixian, Hebei completely drunk. Head of the Hospital (psycho-something-MD) wanted to practice his English (LOL), so he invited me in the huge Hospital for meet. He: 'What do you like to drink?' me: 'I like red wine'. He pulled out that Chinese rice booze, and said: 'Would white wine be OK? me: 'yes, why not.....'

Chinese driver was completely wasted for some 5km ride back to my home.

I've never met a person (non-medic) yet, who would be drunk in the Hospital. Regular people are usually sick or injured in the Hospitals...... ----> you wouldn't believe, what I have to add here (about my family, LOL).

no, i would never get in a car that a drunk was the driver, for one thing unless u know they were/are drunk helps but how do u know that they are intoxicated? The only time u will know is after they start driving and by then its too late if they are drunk! Some people handle booze differently but are u willing to take the chance? Play it safe take a walk or drive yourself

People drive so badly in China that I can't really see how a drunk driver would  be any worse than any other road user. I have been in the car when one of my Chinese friends have been drunk. As long as he goes nice and slow and keeps his eyes on the road and off his phone then it's fine by me. It's the people who have absolutely no idea how to drive that scare me.

Never. I did once drove car while drunk a lot, with the angels above me who protected our car from jumping over small river into the wall and then probably drowning. we were buying another bottle of booze at gas station. At that crucial second, while turning right at speed about 60-80km/h at small local road where asphalt changed to stones, i recalled all my skills from Grand Turismo 3 and managed to escape without a scratch. Only one friendly punch into face from my uncle was included, because his son was in the car. frown

So no, even with myself, never again with drunk people in the car.

Nessquick:

And once, on Easter our friend from Austria with his 3er BMW we all 4 was high a bit and very little booze only involved. night , serpentines and a bit wet after snowing and the small stones they use it on roads to get grip for cars on snow. we ended flying between trees , car on the roof in a shallow waters about 10-15 meters from road. the only injuries was little bruises from broken window glass. we run away immediately, with car plates and docs. later we came back to get the stereo and some other worthy stuff. because you know, the gypsy hyenas are everywhere.

When I lived in Canada I used to drive drunk. I knew what limit was, and whether I was able to handle it or not. One time, I was driving home, and I was probably an 8/10 (A couple more beer, and I wouldn't of been driving), and it was about 1 am so the roads were deserted (fairly small town), and I pass this cop, and he starts following me. I'm drunk enough that I can't keep my car going in a straight line, so about a km ahead he pulls me over. Gives me the usual "Where are you going, what are you doing" So I tell him, and when he comes back to the car he says "Well, my main concern was that you were drinking and driving, which I can clearly see that your not, so you have a good night".

Just be aware though. If the driver realizes that he or she is drunk and takes extra caution, and doesn't drive like an idiot, you'll be fine. Have the balls to ask to get out, if you feel unsafe though. A taxi ride is cheaper than death or injury any day of the week.

When it's put in that light, I certainly can't defend it. I will speak for myself and say that I've never hurt anyone driving, or got into an accident, (drunk or sober). To perputuate a mindset that "some" people can drive drunk is actually rather dangerous, because almost everyone thinks they qualify as that "someone". We can attribute this to the wonderful human quality of naturally overestimating our own abilities. Sorry to hear about your mom.
