Q: Would you rather be in China or home?
I've been home for a few weeks now, managed to wrangle a good job and I'm now apartment hunting. My time in China looks behind me and I can't say I'm upset about that. After my first year there I think I really wanted to go home, but for one reason or another did not.
If you could get a decent gig and such back home, would you rather be there? Or would you rather do whatever it is you're doing in China?
I have been here nearly five years and at the moment have absolutely no desire to be back home. I have a good job which involves much more than just teaching English, I like my colleagues. I am very satisfied with my life here. I have my locational BCD, but then again, I also had to deal with bureaucracy and other details.
I do hope the best for you back home and a smooth re-entry.
Congratulations to you. If given a choice between only those two options, I'd struggle to choose, But, if you gave me a third option, that of travelling, I'd choose that one, no question!
Right now, I'd rather be in China. That could very well be because I haven't been yet. But I am anxious for something different.... for a little while, anyway. I have a great job and a house and all that... but am bored as hell. I'm not going to lie, I am grateful for the great job to return to and the house will still be here. But who knows... maybe I'll fall in love with China or... some amazing Chinese dude (ok, no.) and decide to stay longer.

the dudes really are smaller, condoms are like 4'' long. One of my friends is a fluid extraction engineer and sometimes I see guys in and out of the store in under 5 minutes.

And yeah, I haven't found many Chinese men attractive so I don't have to worry about that. Unless he buys me a panda bear. Then maybe.

My house and car are paid for at home, I don't work in China. I miss my pets terribly, but my life was just too much stress and boring. I could live in China if i had my pets and a good Vet. Maybe I'd live near a small town. I like Guilin. As it is I'm spending too money here. I put $8500 on my credit card last month. That l don't like. I'm paying all the bills on my home also.
For now, I like being in China more. But when it comes time to settle down and have kids, I would rather be home.
Interesting question. Right now I live in China, but still get to visit the motherland once every quarter or so. So about the time I get fed up with China and all her nuances, I can go home and hit the reset button for 2 or 3 weeks. At the end of that time, I'm itching to get back to China. It's working out well so far I think. Biggest stress is having a house that's unattended to (just have a friend go by once a month to check on things, start the cars, check mail, etc).
Spent 6 years in China. Right now I am back in the US for the first time in 5 years. And every day that I stay here I am realizing how hard it is going to be for me to return.
Even though I don't have a job or a house here in the US (Ok, I did just put an offer on a house today & I am starting my own company in the US), I still don't feel any pull back to China.
The hardest part for me is that my wife & kids are still in China. I miss them horribly but even with that, I still don't want to go back. I would love for them to come and join me here. I know that they would have a much better life here. Hopefully, I will have them join me when my business gets up and running.
But for me, at least for now, I will choose to live in the US.

My problem isn't a visa. She can get that any time. My problem is that my wife has a really good job and doesn't want to give it up. She knows that if the she does come to the US she will probably have to settle for a job that is way beneath her skill and pay level.

I think life in china is temporary, and eventually we all go home.
Life here is so superficial. Nothing is real, people aren't real to you. I miss the order of life. Everything is done properly and professionally back home. I really miss it.
But in saying that, the experience here in china is worth it.
I really don't know at this point....Im from Eastern Europe...can't say it is any better than China at this point...but life is hard and not many things are done 'properly and professionally' and it's not getting any better. The food back home is amazing, I miss that a lot...and the people..But you can meet 'real' people here of course 
I work 7 months and have 5 off here. I work 9 hours a week. I can go home once a year and see many countries around China.
Someone said before that ESL work is grueling?
I think that depends on many things. For me it's the best job I've ever had 
The longer I am here the more content I am living here....but I do miss Van a lot some days.
But this is bound to change after I go home next month for 2 weeks....I may not want to return...I miss driving and Kokanee and my (real) apartment.
When I get home I am going to hike Little Lynn Peak....I miss the peace in the bush.
Have been in China over 5 years, yes like everyone miss home and the food of course,but I would never say I have regrets China opens your eyes to another world, because it is. I would not have missed this experience,for anything.....just wish I had come here more years ago, to experience more than I have now....Chinese people are unique one of a kind ,no where else in the world are there people like them,I have traveled and worked in 32 countries all over I think China is number one on my list for a beautiful country, people Chinese food.I will be sorry to leave next year...will I ever come back...you bet ya !
I love my Time in China but know Australia is better for my kids.
when the opportunity to do FIFO comes up I will be more content.
I have my reasons for wanting out of Aus and feel like Im being pushed out sometimes
However there are a lot of advantages in Aus as well
just got to keep wheeling and dealing and get the plan happening
