Q: Would you trust external hard drives here?

As the one I bought in the UK about 5/6 years ago is getting full up, I've got my sites on a new one that can hopefully hold 500-1000GB if there is such a thing. In Beijing, we have our own Silicon Valley in the form of Zhongguancun, but does anyone have any experience buying external hard drives here in general? Are they reliable?

Never buy electronic devices at the Zhongguancun. It's the center of frauds and prices are a lot higher. Even local Chinese get scummed there. Just order one on amazon.cn or www.jd.com (360 buy). Most of my electronic devices are shopped there, including an extrernal hard drive of 500GB at the price of  about 400 RMB. You live in Beijing? It's delivered in 24 hours.

I buy stuff from 360 Buy (as in ohChina's post) and taobao all the time. No problem. I have a 2TB Seagate MSD that has not had a single problem in over a year (remember that electronics today are only supposed to have a 2-year life-span).

Another vote for 360buy.
I usually prefer to buy the harddisk and the casing seperatly. That way, it's a lot more handy if i need to use other drives temporarily, and i also know what's inside. It's also more economical

portable hds are over priced and prone to fail in a year or 2 here. go to metro if you can't wait to get one from your own country.

i repeat do not buy a portable hd until you check the price out at metro

JustinF:

Electronics at Metro are overpriced. 360buy is without a doubt the way to go. But you are absolutely right, it's better not to buy portable harddtives that are already enclosed. On top of that inflated price, you will be paying for the hype of an enclosed hdd. Buy the two seperately, then you can also inspect the harddrive closely.

is he going to buy an ipad or a portable harddrive? go to walmart check the price of a portable 1T hard drive. then go to metro and check the price of a 1t harddrive. then come back and post an apology.

Both places sell the same item at a higher price than 360buy. Plus i don't want to drive there when 360buy can deliver to my place for free.

sorry wrong memory of the price last time. I bought a 750GB external hard drive for 409 Yuan. Now it is only 377 yuan though.

I usually shop for electronics on Taobao and Amazon. I had a small problem with a PSP I purchased, it wouldn't charge. I sent it back and he exchanged it for me.
