Q: Xi Jinping Personality Cult on Rise. Do you agree?
In this week's Economist there is an article about Xi Jinping and his personality cult, which they deem to be on the rise.
However, I feel like this isn't really true. Xi Jinping's face is not everywhere, not as much as his face would need to be in order for him to be deified like that. And, more importantly, I feel like the 'Party' is still the 'Party', and not him. Especially since Zhou's dismissal, other political members' involvement has been clearer, creating the image of the 'Party' as a collective (albeit with differing opinions) rather than just a one-man show.
What do you all think?

It's not a true personality cult, but rather pastiche of Maoist Nationalism, Chinese Xenophobic Natinoalism, and Stalin Purge, with a little bit of Krusheven 'ottepel' for the narod...

Wait, what are you talking about? It's not bait for anything, although I have no idea what CFTU or Craig is, take a look at the Economist cover this month.

i fucking hate CFTU-guy. I know you don't buy into him either, but try not to refer to "The CFTU" like it's an actual group. It's one convicted con man until there is a shred of evidence otherwise.
China loves its moronic leadership. Nothing more than that. They put the face of a man whose policies cost the lives of almost 100,000,000 people from 1932 - 1976 on all their money. They idolize a man that buried 460 scholars alive. They idolize the anti-science, anti-progress, anti-intellectual Qing dynasty with all the TV shows. Of course there is a cult of personality. CCTV enforces it everyday by informing us of Xi's latest burp, testicle scratch and bowel movement.

A few nights ago I was barraged with comments about how political I was being in asking about charismatic Chinese politicians. I also asked if people would have preferred to be a German in the second world war or a Chinese person during Mao's time in power.
Some knuckle dragger accused me of being a rabid anti-semite. The funny thing is I'm Jewish on my mother's side, although her father wasn't jewish so I don't qualify, and I'm certainly not culturally jewish at all. (No posts where I worry about food poisoning and germs etc). :-p
I ought to intervene to tell you to be careful what you say about these issues though. If you get into any trouble, the expat community won't help you.
There is a simple reason why the craziness you mentioned is glossed over. It is face, but in the case of westerners, it's simply due to the politically correct fads which dominated the chattering class mentality of the mid to late twentieth century.
When I studied history I had a very interesting teacher who always lamented the fact that people were always on about Hitler when Stalin was worse.
I have a fresher lament to throw into the ring, but it's better to reflect on it in a safer place.
I always wonder if Chinese people think westerners are a pack of pussies. I blame all of the union hacks, left wing academics and apologists in the media in general for China's rise. I hope their citizens won't be too ginned up if there's some kind of economic or political crisis.
It is bizarre how a man who kills so many can have statues built of him, while a woman who got rid of free milk and closed a few government departments in England was reviled as a witch when she died.
Humanity is something pretty out there...
