Q: You are on the pedastrian crosswalk, a car approching honks -

who got the balls to continue crossing the crosswalk?

I have so much taste to do so, but I am copying the chinese way: I jump back. Any other experiences what happens if you pretend not to react?

R turn police car honking, while I am crossing pedestrian crossing (on green). I stop, and say: 'no ming bai'. Then, I s-l-o-w-l-y proceed.

I am convinced, we should teach traffic rules in China as part time 'venture', after English classes. Cops in part-time classes, first!

I commute from home to work by bike. I use bike lanes. Time to time, I have the odd car on the bike lane (driving counter-way or not...). The bike lane is just large enough for one car. Me, driving my bike where I'm supposed to drive it, I block the car. The driver just honk so I push myself... and I don't move, I ignore him and I let him honk. If it's in the evening, I will likely have little patience and I will add a middle finger to that.

My only concern is, do they understand 'middle finger'?angel

I get out of the way of a 2000-pound vehicle coming straight at me with no intention of stopping. I reckon I'd lose if I didn't budge.

I do not start across crosswalk if car/truck/e-bike is anywhere near. they have (take) ROW. the human body will always lose in a smash-up confrontation w/ moving metal*

You'd be surprised how hesitant the normal 'gung ho' Chinese driver becomes when faced with a foreigner on the crossing! Its great..I give em hell.

I lock eyes with the driver, and keep walking. 9 times out of 10, they stop.As long as they're not certain whether or not it's illegal to run over a Westerner (Actually, I'm not sure either), they don't want to chance it.

On a BCD  I once walked up to the Driver and removed the Keys from the ignition  and with a throw that would have made a test cricketer proud through the keys onto the back of a passing tricycle. then got the hell out of there. the silly bugger is probably still there wondering what happened .no The only reason I recon I got away with it is the shock factor

If you're try to cross the street correctly and you see the car stop to allow you to cross then look who's in the car, you might see me, of course go ahead and cross people with peace in your mind..

cooter:

I get some of the most confused looks from Chinese pedestrians when I do this.  I'll even motion them to cross with a wave of my hand....just flabbergasting to them.

If I'm the pedestrian, and I've got the little green walking man telling me to go (right of way), they can honk all they want.  I'll continue on my way at a damn leisurely pace.  In my experience, they won't stop...just swerve around you.  I try my best to avoid unregulated crosswalks, IE, not at an intersection with the pedestrian signals.....as these are truly free-for-all deathmatches.

I stop, stare and extend extremities as appropriate. When motorist honk at people in pedestrian crossings they deserve to burn in hell. Now, where is my head lamp adjuster aka baseball bat.

DrMonkey:

In my wild dreams, the car just ignores me and run on me. But it's *my* dream, so my body have the inertia of a whole planet and the strength of pure diamond. Once the car crashed on my body, I look at the driver, while my eyes starts to shine of a bright, ho so bright red. Firing up lasers in 3, 2, 1...

This, or my personal fleet of low orbit ion cannons and target designator embedded in my retina. *bbbzzzzZZZZZZZ* *put on strong black glasses* *BBBBOOOOOMMMMmmmmm*

The only thing that I found that really works when wanting to cross a crosswalk is the DEATH STARE. Tried and proven since I arrived in China. It has worked for me in umpteen provinces and cities. For those who don't understand - it's a cross between playing chicken and the no laugh race. I still haven't found a Chinese driver who can outstare me or won't stop and let me pass. It's a frame of mind. Don't let them smell fear, look them straight in the forehead and walk, don't run, jwalk or dawdle get across the road and don't look back.

Works every time.

When people have the nerve to honk at me when I am walking on the SIDEWALK, and usually take my time getting out of the way followed by the one-fingered salute

I drive.  I got a ticket for driving on Friday (restricted if your plate ends in 5),  I had to go to "traffic re-education."  So, I was forced to watch their video about traffic accidents.  I highly recommend that you DO NOT RISK IT!  They show you a video of the street cameras.  The truth is that most Chinese people educated in China are 50% retarded.  They WILL hit you.  Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death in China.  I'm not about to give a RETARD the choice.  Seriously?  Some of you are willing to put your life in the hands of the retarded Chinese?  Haven't you heard of "Chinese apathy?"  Whatever, watch the video I did and you'll realize just how stupid Chinese people are.

You should call them a dumbass and shout "bu zhidao zenme kai che ma? Suzhicha shabi."
