What kind of job were you offered?  Teaching English?  I know lots of people in this university though no English teachers.  Depending on who the judge is the school ranks among the top 3 or 4 schools in China so the students are pretty bright.  Lots and lots aspire to study abroad, if you go to the library you will see scores of students with those TOEFL and GRE and other books.  There are lots of foreigners on campus, some students but also a good bit of professors are being hired to teach other subjects in English.  Needless to say most student's English level is high and that could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.  If you have any other questions I can try to answer them.

PBrown22 above, good post...set me thinking...

I was surprised to read that this year the Chinese Academy of Sciences rated Zhejiang University as the No. 1 university in China.  Really surprised!

Search for 'Helen Group'! They are affiliated with Zhejiang University. It maybe Helen who's offering you job!?

Is offered salary unusually high? Look at Dave's ESL Cafe, Helen advertise many job vacancies there with start name 'CTN PBO.......'

Run, if it's Helen!or Zhejiang University!

pbrown22:

I did look into teaching at Zheda a few years ago and remember the salary they offered then was quite low.  Even lower than average at most universities in China.  Not sure if that's changed now but ICNIF might be on to something.  Please check that its not Helen's offering the job.

I had an offer from Helens Group for Zhejiang University, it was for 5,000, turned it down flat when I saw the contract was in her name.

So think carefully, if your contract is like mine there is a clause saying you are not allowed to discuss the terms of this contract with anyone else lol I wonder why.

So just want to say a big thanks for all the comments written on here that point out the dangers and pitfalls that you come across as a newbie.  Thankfully I listened to them all and took the advise of research, research and then research some more.  I now have a lovely contract signed with an international school to start on Feb 18th.

So thanks one and all and be very vary about any dealings with Helen, you just have to keep looking and applying, good luck

Indeed if this Helen and the Helen Group, be extremely, extremely careful for sure.  No amount of caution is too great with this lady and her group.  Any dealings with her will most likely ruin your China experience.

icnif77:

Helen is very good at getting Z visa, and renter China from HK. They are absolute masters in that matter! It took Helen less than two weeks to get Z from HK Embassy.

Another School in Tianjin had their request for Working permit and Z in HK denied 10 days earlier. Tianjin PSB advice School, teacher can apply for Z only in his home country.

After one has Residence permit, best solution is to part ways with Helen.

I am still waiting for October salary (5000). FEB in Yingkou assured me, that is against Chinese Law to withhold Foreign teacher's salary.

The 'newest' Helen trick is salary of 7500 for BA, 1000 higher for MA for less than 80 hours per week.
Helen will deduct 2700 from salary as 'housing allowance, insurance and resident tax'.

Teacher will live in run down 25 m2 'hole' on the Campus, courtesy of School.
When ask Helen to use 'housing allowance' for renting my own apartment in the city, reply was negative! Reason given was: 'Helen cannot guarantee safety to Foreign teacher living in the City in his or her own apartment'!

Beyond 'ridiculous'!

There is also a bit of info on Helen at echinacities.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
