Big movie fan but still new to Chinese movies. The best i've come across was 'A World Without Thieves' staring Andy Lau. Great film and it didn't even have any kung fu in it.
So, any recommendations?
PS: 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' doesn't count; most Chinese don't recognize it as a 'Chinese' movie, and rightly despise actress Zhang Ziyi for apparently capitalizing on the earthquake in Sichuan. 'Big Trouble in Little China' doesn't count either:)

Mao's Last Dancer (not really Chinese)
Hero
Shaolin
Inseparable (Kevin Spacey Chinese made movie)
Some of Jackie Chan older HK movies are good
Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin soccer
I recommend a movie called 大地震, English title was Aftershock. It's about the Tangshan earthquake back in the 1970's. Saw it in a theater here, pretty good for a tearjerker.
some popular mainland movies:
In the Heat of the Sun ——《阳光灿烂的日子》
Farewell My Concubine ——《霸王别姬》
To Live ——《活着》
Big Shot's Funeral——《大碗》
See "Sex & Zen" series movie.. u will laugh a lot... its so funny!!..
Otherwise:
"Let Bullet Fly"
"Under the hawthorn tree"
anything by zhang yimo, exept for the last one, the one with Christian Bale. that was just your run of the mill propagandish movie. bit of a disapointment zhangyimo used to piss of the government but now hes cranking ot nationalistic crap. oh well. its beautyfull to look at though. and some of the movies mentioned were hong kong movies. so they dont really count
Gaohao:
I saw that one with Christian Bale, I thought it was good. Don't see how it was nationalistic though, it was about a bunch of hookers.
rich45:
well to begin with all the chinese solders are super patriotic and heroically decide to fight on. giving their lives to take out just one tank. then that one super solder dude who takes out a hole crapload of dirty japs by himself. before heroically giving his life and taking a whole crapload of dirty japs with him. hell even the hookers end up heroically giving their lives.
and the japanese. all they do is run around screaming RAPE!!! VIRGINS!!!! WAAAA WE ARE SO EVIL WAAAA.
its not a terrible movie. but coming from a truly awesome director. this is not his best work by far.
xinyuren:
I do not particularly like his work. He knows how to make some beautiful scenes, (I cite "The Curse of the Golden Flower" and "House of Flying Daggers" as perfect examples) but the stories lack depth.
"Xiuxiu : the sent down girl", but you may not find it as it was banned by the Chinese government.
A very moving story about a city girl sent to the countryside during the cultural revolution. She sells her body to the local communist party leader to try to escape her situation. I got tears in my eyes at the end.
xinyuren:
Thank you! Thank you! I have been trying to remember the name of this movie for some years now! I once saw it about 12 years ago and was touched. When I tried to rent it again, I could not recall the name for the life of me. Great movie.
How did Zhang Ziyi capitalize on the Sichuan Earthquake?
Gaohao:
Apparently she used her name to raise money and kept a load of it for herself. It's just a story I heard. Don't know if it's a fact or not.
check out infernal affair trilogy, a hong kong film, later remade by Hollywood
Yes...Naked Killer...a 1992 Hong Kong film that is somewhat of a cult classic.
It's about 2 lesbian hitwomen who target rapists and mutilate their genitals while killing them...awesome stuff!!
I second the motion on Farewell my Concubine. A great movie that provides insight on Chinese history and culture in addition to an excellent story. One of my personal favorites. Also, "The Last Emperor". Although, technically it's an Italian made movie, it was filmed in China and has Chinese actors. If I recall, it was the first time the Chinese government allowed a foreign film crew into the Forbidden City. "Se, Jie" (Lust, Caution) is also a must see.
xinyuren:
Also, "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman" and "Raise the Red Lantern", the only Zhang Yimou movie I wholeheartedly recommend.
xinyuren:
Oh, and I'm remembering another one. "Chinese Ghost Story". The original, not the modern remake.
