Seems to me the drivers think they are. Anyone else notice this?
No, they aren't in my city. I enforce Western pedestrian rules in China. I cross pedestrian crossing and on the full stop are: police cars, buses, trucks and all other Western and non Western car brands without exemption.
When I'm walking around the city with Chinese (last one yesterday with rep. for RP extension): 'Follow me! You're in China!'
He would wait forever for 'no cars road' to cross, and my blood pressure is just some 115/75.
In Dongguan especially everyone seem exempt from every law. Except when the Beijing officials come to town...
I was standing at a set of lights the other day waiting to cross and watching cops pull over random cars.. I assume for some sort of registration transgression because they didn't seem to be breaking any other rules.
I was actually really impressed that the cops pulled over a couple of rich guy cars with no license plates. I could see how they would be worried it would be some connected wanker driving it who would use their connections to have the cop fired or demoted or something but they pulled them over anyway.
Credit to the cops for actually doing their jobs when it could bring all sorts of crap down on them.
1: Range Rover doesnt make cars
2: Little known fact, Audis are in fact exempt from all traffic laws. This is because Audis are only driven by government officials and foreigners who are better than everyone else. If you see someone driving an Audi it is law to give him the utmost respect. Kissing his ass is a bonus. Literally a bonus. They will take off points accrued on your licesnse.
If you dont know anyone who drives an Audi please PM me. Your life will improve dramatically.
jetfire9000:
Range Rovers are listed in cars.com. And also the definition for a car is very broad. Pretty much being something with four wheels, a combustable engine, and something that transports a small number of passengers.
ScotsAlan:
White range rovers seem especially bad here. They far outrank black Audis.
mike695ca:
Well you sure are a master of semantics arent you? Yes I am sure cars.com has Range Rovers. I am guessing that creating an SUV.com would be a little bit of trouble. Synergy and all. But ok lets just ignore that fact that they create terms like SUV, CUV , trucks, lorries and countless others precisely for the purpose of differentiating then from cars. Good for you. I guess calling the bus you take to work everyday a " car" makes you feel better. Cool.
jetfire9000:
Lmao. Youre really over analyzing here. Im serious - look up car. Try yahoo or dictionary.com. Come back and post the results of what you get. Blame it on semantics - but thats language for you, and you were making a language based gripe.
ScotsAlan:
Yes. I take the bus. That makes me green. Someone who cares about the world. Let me guess what you drive Mike... BMW 1 series... black.... with no reg plate ?
dongbeiren:
Mike, there you go again attacking people who don't drive. I thought you mentioned on the other thread you were weaning yourself of this. Baby steps.
mike695ca:
Damn it scotts! You know indrive an Audi! HEY EVERYONE WHEN I WAS TALKING ABOUT FOREIGNERS WHO DRIVE AUDIS BEING BETTER THAN EVERYONE I WAS REFERRING TO ME!! just didnt want any confusion.
ScotsAlan:
Yeah well mike... you told me you drive one... but I have never seen it. Is it a black jetta with an Audi badge... ? ... I dont know :-)
mike695ca:
Damn it! You know i dont have an answer for that! It was raining and you totally saw my Audi umbrella that can no way be bought anywhere else. I know it was ur idea to park and walk to eat so you had plausible deniability. This is not right Scotts, not right at all. You know calling me a liar with no way to prove myself is my kryptonite!

I drive a Kaiqi and the wife has a Luyuan .... both of us have a desire to upgrade someday but the time is not right just yet. the dream of a BMW-7 straight from Munich is high on my list of things to do and then forget. Like a have fun for a week and than trash it ... I have most fun wrecking things, which I think may be a Chinese thing, but they don't even do that well....... constantly trying to run in to pedestrians, cars, trucks , buses and only occasionally succeed. If only they looked where they were going, they could hit the bus full of kids.
I really used to hate all the cars. But now i have a new enemy. Those infuriating scooters. They think they are the real law. They think every other entity, person and car alike, have to yield to them. Often times the people on those things have a son or daughter hugging them from the back and are yabbering in a cellphone when jutting through traffic. They think the road belongs to them. And sometimes you read about their tragic accidents, wondering what was going through their mind.
I just saw a Range Rover driving way too fast outside my neighborhood almost smash into a bus for no reason. I regularly see Range Rovers going the wrong way down a one way street honking at anyone who dares to get in their way. The Range Rover seems to be the tuhaomobile in China, the equivalent of some tasteless rapper driving an Escalade in the US.
I am getting a bit sick of seeing those cars in my city. There are so many Audis, BMWs and Range Rovers that I think it is literally destroying the reputation of the brand.
Most of then are driven (if you can call it that) by rural folk that struck it rich when the government took over their land, smashed their house and gave it to real estate developers. They are always going through red lights and acting a damn fool.
The cops will pull over luxury cars without licenses because... it means they have no guanxi and just money. If they had guanxi they would have a damn license plate! So probably some nong fu that wanted to cruise down the road needing to boost his face.
They be making Audis look like... the kind of car a tu hao buys. Make them stop Mike, make them stop!
And Yet Again.
ScotsAlan:
I agree robk. I reckon if someone produced a 30k rmb production phone... these guys would buy it. The shao sans would demand it.
People who drive expensive cars are better than people who drive cheap cars who are better than people who ride scooters and e-bikes who are better than people who ride bicycles who are better than people who take public transit who are better than people who walk.
The lower you are in this hierarchy, the more you are expected to follow the rules. I'd love to see some Portlandia style "bicycle rights" militants take a ride around a Chinese city.
The real questions is, "Are Audi drivers more likely to be douchebags, or are douchebags more likely to drive and Audi?"
To be fair, most drivers here drive like they are exempt from car laws, since they kidna are. Cars can drive as fast as they want, drive on the sidewalk, park in the middle of the street, etc. It's against the law, but the cops are too lazy to enforce the laws.
It's one reason I don't drive in China. Back home, I had a nice Ford Focus, but back there, it was a necessity. Here, cars are almost entirely a status symbol (at least in the big cities), which also is likely to increase the douchebag factor, since the people buying cars are the people who feel they are better than others, and that their superiority comes from buying a car.
I think they all drive like that. You just notice the nice cars more. Plus the nice cars are bigger.
Anyone with a red license plate is exempt from laws. As mike mentioned lots of Audis are driven by government officials. I suspect this is the most expensive car covered by their expenses.
Actually, I've noticed that the worst drivers in China (and that's quite the accomplishment!) are people behind the wheel of Chinese brand SUV's, especially that horrible HAVAL thing, as well as the BYD Lexus RX300 knock off.
Also it's true that if you are a government official, or have a military plate on your car you can do whatever you want in traffic.
Looking at the Bentley and Jaguar parked with two wheels suspended in the air outside my apartment, I can say it is not limited to certain brands at least in my vicinity. I witness on average about two crashes/crash aftermath on fortnightly basis and most of the cars involved are not Audis or BMWs rather the new drivers who just don't know where is the road and pedestrian street?
For sure the 'silent killers' scooter drivers are exempted from all laws since they can drive anywhere they damn wish.
I live in Yuyao, a suburb of Ningbo and the police do not enforce anything. They occasionally write parking tickets but only in the street in front of the 5 star hotel. For the most part they rely on the traffic cameras to catch people running lights and speeding. Other than that it's a free for all. They do show up promptly after an accident though!
police do not give tickets the cameras do so every 2 years you go to the police dept and pay yourf fine each infraction is 100 rmb i had 12 infractions in,2 years 0 points but had to pay 1200 rmb if u run a tef light its 3 points against your record sperding the same if u get 12 points they suspend your license
Hotwater:
When was the last time you drove a car here?
You have to make sure your fines are paid every year before the anniversary of your Licence being issued plus you can't get your car safety test certificate issued if there are outstanding fines against you/your car.
100rmb for a penalty? Most penalties now are 150 or 200. Driving through a red light is now 6 points!
how did you get fines and no points? Most offences carry point penalties (I should know, I've had enough!)
Scandinavian:
Zhuhai trafic police stations have 3 lines. 1 line for using an automated system to pay tickets, last time we were there it wasn't connected to the points system, so using it to pay a ticket that would otherwise cost points it would not. 1. line for paying to a real person, this costs points. 1 line for going into the office and give your friend a red envelope and make all problems go away.
