Yes, in the main city they are banned. Once you get into the outer areas(Panyu, Baiyun, etc) you see a lot about. Not sure in those areas if there is no ban or the rules just aren't enforced. 

You do see some in the city but occasionally you'll see a pickup truck and chenguan stopping ebikes & confiscating them. 

Yes. They are banned. But the confusion is over what is an E-bike and what is a motorcycle.

In the city, the "moped" style are banned. However, I see lots of "E-assisted" pedal bikes going around the city center. Legal or not... don't know.

I live on the very edge of the municipal area of GZ, and the general feeling of the rule is wither the ebike has pedals or not. Pedals ok, no pedals not ok. But of course, the big heavy scooter types are banned, it's just not as enforced as rigourously as it is in the city.

I have an e-bike that I use where I live, but it is more of a push bike with an e-assist, rather than a full blown e-moped.

I saw the bike "confiscation" truck in my neighbourhood last week. No e-bikes or e-scooters on it, just petrol bikes.

So, e-scooters definate ban. e-bikes.... maybe not, seems not... don't know.

It all comes down to how the vehicles are defined.

Wow, thats devastating to me. I had a great e-bike in Nanning while I was there and really loved zipping through traffic. I was prepared to get a local license but you say its really difficult. I will explore that option further. Any idea why its difficult? Do you mean the test or the fact I am a foreigner?

My little city is pretty "progressive". they banned tuk tuk (3 wheel taxis) type things in the past year. They made everybody get a license for their bike that can go above 40km/hr, I think it is, . They now demand helmets. And they are pretty aggressive with this stuff, not just show. I had to go buy a smaller bike, while the wife had to go get a license for the other one.

Tianhe Guangzhou, in 2011-12, I never saw a bike on the main streets, but if you just go to the back roads, they are there. Times they are a changing....but, I question, what is the right bike to ban?  the gas one or the electric one?

I look off my balcony and I can see the potential for 10 lanes of traffic....  4 lane road ... motor/e-bike thing on both sides .. plus a walking path and a bicycle path on one side    ( seldom see anybody or thing on these routes- except me)....if only they would use the one designated for their mode of transportation, probably wouldn't' see this backup every day at start and finish of workdays. work in progress!
