Hi all!!
My brother is coming Oct 22-27 to visit me in Guangzhou. I'm pretty excited since I haven't seen him in a few years. So, I need be a good tour guide with lots of things for him to see and do. So, please help!
I was thinking:
1. KTV (needs a lot of English songs, of course).
2. Massage. He just wants to come to relax and get a massage. Where is a great place to go??
2. Restaurants--From totally swanky to low rent. I was thinking of doing a sample of the different regions in China. So... north, south, east, west... whatever. As long as the food is awesome, we'll be there!
3. Cool places to see.
4. Fun activities
5. Anything other recommendation.
Since he'll only be here for a few days, I think it would be better to stay in and around Guangzhou.
I appreciate the advice!!
There are more than a few KTV's around Tiyuxilu/Tiyuzhongxin.
As for the part if a lot of English songs are available, I'm not sure about that. I've been to a few KTV's (3 in Shanghai and 1 here) and all of them had a lot of English songs. I even remember singing "Do you remember" from Jay Sean and Sean Paul...
Can't help you out with the massage part. Maybe you can try a relaxing day at a spa?
Restaurants, Guangzhou restaurant is an ok place. Had DIm Sum there once and it was nice. Usually the bigger restaurants' menus will have dishes from different parts of China.
Bring him to your favorite hot pot place if you have one.
You guys can check out the Canton Tower at night, take a few nice pics and walk along the river.
Can also check out the Party Pier for some drinks.
If you're into amusement parks, there is Changlong amusement park and also Changlong water park. I think there is also a Changlong Safari something.
I second the suggestion of Canton Tower.
I believe it is the Highest Building in China! and something like sixth highest in the world.
I can't help you with 1 and 2, but try searching Dianping for reviews, maybe.
2b. If you want low rent, but good food, go to Dongshankou (Line 1 of metro), and walk down the old road from Exit A. While the usual spots like Saizeria, RBT, KFC and McD's are here, there are many amazing small shops here with good authentic Chinese. He'll be blown away by the taste of this fast food compared to what you get back home from a take-out Chinese shop. And the prices are awesome! Plus, the architecture is very nice, and it is connected to a really scenic park at night at the bottom of the hill. Of course being low rent, you'll need some Chinese practice since they don't have English menus.
For a quality sit-down, check out the malls China Plaza at Matyr's Park, or Wanda Plaza in the Baiyun district. The sheer amount of places to eat at Wanda is worth going there for, it is an endless mall of food and shops.
3. The obvious must see is Zhujiang New Town and the Canton Tower at night. Ride the APM around, walk the Zhujiang Park and show off the cool buildings like the Opera House and IFC building. Visit the now free Haixinsha Park. When Zhujiang is lit up, the area is absolutely amazing.
4. If you want some good food and do some sight seeing at night, buy a dinner cruise. One of the boats serves a buffet of Cantonese food, and it is mighty delicious. You can take in all the beautiful views at night, and get a meal in.
If he likes roller coasters and amusement parks, Changlong amusement park is actually pretty good, and worth the trip.
