Q: Buying a wedding ring - any recommendations?

Hi guys,

I want to buy an engagement ring for my girl, but I'm not sure which stores I can trust. What are the most reliable and reputable places that are recognized internationally here?

Any idea on whether the prices are similar or much more expensive than in America?

First a word of caution.  In China, normally engagement rings are not used by the majority of locals in the "getting married" process.  So, unless your GF asked you for one, you can ignore that step.

I recently priced a few for a good friend from Chicago.  I would say you could get a set of engagement ring and wedding bands from 1600 to 4000 Rmb, depending on quality and diamond size and quality/color.  Of course, there are some even higher.

Now, in China, yellow gold 24 karats is the common thing.  After that, I would say platinum comes second, maybe white gold third.  Also, you can get the engagement ring, or wedding bands with or without diamonds, or any other precious stone you fancy.

Now, I will shop around, inquire prices, ask for discounts, and then buy from the one that gives you the best deal, and offers certificate of authenticity on the set.

In my mother's generation there was no such thing as engagement rings. But I know that for the generation now, the engagement rings are very much important. I guess China is more westernized now. So I wouldn't rule out the engagement ring.

Learn the 4 "C"s of diamonds. Spend 2 or 3 months wages on the ring. I found jewelery to be more expensive in China because ot the gold K. From what I priced alot, your experience might be different. There is a different size scale between between asia and america. The asian scale is numerically higher for the same size.

The asian finger is smaller than you think.

I bought my GF a gold braclet at home $90, I had my neighbors 12 year old girl try it on as I thought it might be too big, Well it is way too big. I looked at some similar bracelets tonight, they were $350+, didn't buy another one.

Best thing is to buy here a reasonably nice ring. Then buy the real ones in the US. Gold is cheaper and the quality is better.

In my opinion the most important thing would be the way that you'll propose to your girlfriend, because it's not the ring, but the moment that both of you can make special to your lives...
I wish you happiness!

try giving a .015C diamond and see how happy she is.

Try Tesiro.. they have better designs.. a lil more expensive though..

Is your would be chinese?... if so there is nothing called engagement ring... its wedding ring.. : Ring exchange.. means you need buy 2.. one for you as well.

If you care feelings than just the money.. try Tesiro's pair rings Pt. with Diamond.. the speciality is that the 2 diamonds are from a single bigger diamond.. feeling of oneness...

If you can go back to the states, I'd say it's better to go back there and get it, because it's so expensive here. Or if you're going to HK then getting it there would be an option.

Jyao87.

If you think engagement rings are expensive here, and cheaper in USA, I feel you are wrong.
I bought one in 18 Kt white gold and a 1-1/4 ct diamond on it, cost me $ 5,000 US dollars at Zale's. I can get the same ring made here for between 3,000 and 4,000 Rmb, with one hell of a saving.
I helped a friend from Chicago buy one for his fiance. It was a set, engagement and wedding ring for her, and his wedding ring, all matching. In platinum, and a 1 carat diamond (no flaws, with certificate). His cost was 4800 Rmb plus change. But you have to visit a few places, and do negotiate on prices.

jyao87:

Oh really, because even Australians go to the states to buy it there as it's much cheaper. But wow 4k for 1 ct? That so cheap! What's the colour and clarity? 1 ct in Australia is about 9 - 10k AUD. But that's with excellent clarity and at least E colour or even F colour. And I know of Chinese who don't buy it in China because of the excessive costs.

Most Chinese do not buy in China due to a combination of factors. Like they gain more face if they purchase foreign made goods, distrust local merchants to sell poor quality and many fakes, etc. In general, asking price here will be high, based on gold existing daily averages, and keep in mind it is 24, not 18. Yet, there is a lot of room for batgaining, because those chain stores bought the gold months ago, at a lot cheaper than today's prices. Same as for diamonds, purchased in lot at wholesale prices, not at real retail price for each stone. Here, most platinum sets are in the 6,000 to 8,000 range, and if you are any good at bargaining and walk out, you may end up paying in the 4 to 5K range. And Ted, when I do help a friend, I do not make money out of it. And in all honestly, I do not care much for the jewerly business. But I do know a little about it, and do know that sometimes profit margins are in the 700 % range. Like you can buy a Rolex gold watch for $ 5,000 or $ 6,000 wholesale, and sell it for $ 15,000 or more nowdays. My grandfather sold them for many years. In 1964 he bougth for me a Rolex President 18 Kt gold watch. His cost was $700 US for the watch and $ 900 for the wrist band. The retail at that time was in the $ 6,000 to $ 8,000 range.

But are you certain the certificates you got are real ? I'd be also concerned about buying fakes.

I know that in Australia, the prices are around the 10,000AUD mark for a good 1ct diamond. And in China it's more or less the same. And friends back home have gone to the US or ordered from the US because it's a fraction of the price there. And Chinese go to HK or those who are fortunate enough they go to the States. I agree on how they like to flaunt their OS goods. And it's definitely true that they have lost faith in China's quality and authenticity.

I've had a browse in department stores in SH at some diamond rings around the 1ct - 2ct mark, and they were from 50,000RMB to about 90,000RMB. But I don't know what the diamond clarity or colour is.

I would be interested in buying a wholesale diamond. Do you have anywhere in China that is reputable? I would be interested to see and make a price comparison.

Online retailers that sell certified jewelry are registered and legitimate. A reputable and trustworthy jeweler should be willing to get you a GIA grading certificate which proves that the jewelry you buy isreal. I’ve seen a good reliable online store at http://www.thediamond.com/anniversary-rings.html that offers all types of wedding rings and loose diamonds at reasonable prices. GIA graded diamond rings are definitely the type you want to buy.

I ordered my custom wedding ring in Shanghai from a jeweler, Yves Lemay, the ring is perfect and the price is cheaper than the big brands and the quality is very high. If you know exactly what diamond you want he can find it for you with the best price. For me, I don't know anything about diamonds and he is a very good adviser.

I don't recommend buying one in China, because they're all outrageously expensive. The same ring that would cost me only $1500 in America will cost about $40k USD in China. Furthermore, my wife never asked me for one here, and most people never buy them.

However, I plan on buying her a wedding ring back home since the savings are astronomical.

Go to CRD, there's one in every city I think. They have many discounts & specials, quality is fine. Got an engagement diamond ring and wedding bands for around 4000 (white gold).

Hong Kong stuff is much much more expensive. Well, depends on how much you want to spend, it all looks the same to me .

We gotta do the fancy photos next week LOL.

Buy a synthetic diamond. Same thing, less money. If she complains, it's time to find another fiancee.

going to Hongkong or Taiwan would certainly be a good idea to buy a ring with a reasonable and acceptable price.

I bought a diamond ring in Xinjiang that cost RMB 8,000 after a 20% discount (probably not real).  It looks pretty good but, most importantly, the bride loves it!

Now I amuse myself by trying to pick the times she'll decide to wear it.  So far, no pattern that I can detect, seems to be random, but I'm watching.

Because of this ring on, ring off thing I suspect it won't be long before it's lost.as she can lose things. Already this month a phone and a hair clip...and keys locked in the house is a specialty.

Dear Diamond seekers, I believe that there is no more reliable or cheaper way to buy a diamond then from wholesale company. I work in an Israeli loose diamond company and we have a huge stock from small to big pieces. We are operating in Beijing and Beijing area , all north China area, Shanghai, Chengdu and HK.

If interested, please write to michael@mgdiamonds.com. I am foreigner, live in BJ and will be more then happy to help.
