Q: Chinese Driving, Guangzhou
So, yesterday I was in a minor traffic accident. Im on a motorcycle traveling the posted speed limit (60 kph), on a 4 lane main road. This idiot who is in the right center lane is stopped, and decided to simply turn right without looking to see if anyone is coming up from the right lane. Unfortuantely, I was in the right lane and had no time to stop. I had 3 options: 1) put it on its side, 2) hit the rear of the vehicle, 3) attempt a side-swipe. I luckily did #3, but I hit the passenger side mirror with my shoulder going around 35-40 kph, (yes, OUCH, it hurt and still hurts). Luckily it wasnt knocked out of socket, but it sure felt like it for the first few minutes. So my question is, does the typical Chinese auto driver suck at driving?

Yes they do suck because it is the first generation of drivers, their parents / grandparents never drove.

Makes logical sense to me. Ive seen so many times of drivers being 120 degree or 180 degree drivers, meaning they simply cant think/see beyond the front window.

I like this, cause it is a first generation of drivers. I t is also a first generation of plumbers and electricians ... not like you can depend on the "old guy" to know....the kids are doing OK.... .. but you better know a bit about your plumbing or your electricity before you allow them to sign off.

Chinese drivers rarely even check their side mirrors when turning. Right of way in China is simply just the person further behind should give way to the person further ahead. Blind spots are ignored.
They suck at driving because the false sense of security given by the metal cage surrounding them and because in every occasion they can get away with it, they just behave to what suits them, first and only.
Not to mention that the driving instructors, being the same, don't teach nothing other than moving a car around.
Where about in GZ are you riding a motorbike? They are banned in most of the city.
Chinese usually slightly ignore all bikes, ebike and motor vehicles because in their crazy mind, this is the transportation of poor people. So they expect these "poor" people to give way for them. It doesn't matter if you are cruising in a Harley worth like 500 000 RMB, that's how their brains work.
In addition, they constantly cut each other off without warning. Just expect that nobody around you know how to really drive and give yourself LOTS of space...
If a taxi driver is around, expect them to drive like a fare is going to magically spontaneously appear in front of you.
BTW - What was the result of the collision? In most of China, if a car collides with the motor vehicle or bike... the car driver has to compensate.

The SUV driver was driving in a convoy of 4 total SUVs. I dont know Chinese, and he didnt know English. I was expecting him to be considerate, but that didnt happen. He made gestures that I was driving too fast, and hit him. so I had to pay for the broken passenger mirror. I didnt realize that one of their party took my keys from my motorbike so i coulnt leave. I ended up paying him 200 rmb. A shitty deal, but it was 7-8 vs me. what wa i to do ? I dont have plates either, so i was driving illegal. it was a raw deal, but lesson learned.
