Q: DIY Air filter

I'm thinking of getting one of those DIY Air Filter thingamabobs, the ones that are just a fan with a filter on it... anyone else tried it before? Does it work as well as the ridiculously expensive ones?

It should work to some extent. I was thinking about that as put the filter in the aircon intake. It should work. The expensive ones work same way, they just added few nice buttons with led light...

Not sure if that will work.  The air will move in the path of least resistance, that is, around the filter.

You could make a tube to have a snug fit at the end of the fan, but the increased workload would burn the fan motor out.

Having said that, a fairly coarse mesh draped over the front of the fan would capture a fair bit of crud, especially is the mesh was damp.  But it would not collect anywhere near as much crud as a dedicated filter unit.
