Q: Do Chinese high schools teach sex education?

A friend of mine told me it wasn't til university she got a sex ed class from a conservative, STD-fear-inducing 60 year old professor...

I found it hard to believe kids aren't told things sooner...

i heard from one of my Chinese friend that in china talking about sex is a taboo and they don't give proper sex education to high school students. i am surprised to hear that even some of the Chinese who get in to collage doesn't have much knowledge about sex education.

Yup, pretty much.

My girlfriend never had a sex education class until the 2nd year of university I believe, and even then, the purpose seemed to scare the crap out of students by going over the symptoms and consequences of diseases, leading up to "hey, if you DO ever had sex, use contraception". Yea, right.

It can be a real problem has a lot of Chinese reach adulthood completely oblivious about sexuality. It is a choice China, as a society, decided to make. When I first arrived, I was very surprised as back in Montana, 'Merica, it is the complete opposite! Baylee-Ann, who's like a sister to me, told me she learned sexuality at quite a young age, and it helped her a lot during high school to avoid the traps all the guys would lay in front of her. She'd kick'em in the balls a say "Nice try, Sherlock, but I wasn't born yesterday". Maybe it's why she got the nickname "Nutcracker"...

Here in China, they don't learn sexuality but it seems to work for them. As far as I understood, they start their sexual life later on, compared to 'Merica. It can be a hassle but it is important to adapt. What is important is not to ask oneself "it should have been done that way" but work with what you have at hand.

When I first met my Chinese girlfriend, she was totally oblivious as how sexuality worked. She barely talks about it with her friends, so I had to take on the role of teacher. It took a lot of time, but I was able to train her on what is good and what is bad. There are some habits that are good to take, other are just no-no, and she was a very good student. at first, she thought it was weird I would wear my green-dotted silver speedo before going to sleep, but she understood it was normal behaviour. I encouraged her to take initiative so she could blossom into a fun-loving Chinese girlfriend.

But beware, it takes a lot of work. I did it because the moar and moar we were together, the moar I realized she was the perfect fit for me. Her sense of humour is up the roof - albeit she should broaden her repertoire - and she's not scared of anything.

When there is love, sky is the limit!

There is sexual repression in China, as they managed to pass sex as a time waste. That's why guy don't last. It does the job in a biological point of view, and they can do whatever else is more important to them!

No, never.

And I remembered the first conversation between my mom and I was when I was senior in college. The conversation was like my mom said “Be careful about men, they only want to have sex, and after they get what they want from u, u've nothing left and be dumped”. Feel really funny, but yes, this is how Chinese(old generation)think about sex or let’s say, pre-marriage sex?

That's crazy Wenna! Even in university they never told you anything about sex, contraception, etc?

Why not? I mean...in supermarkets, they have candies and condoms when you're paying at the cashier...why don't they talk about these things?

Well this is just the way Chinese is.
Don't like to talk about it. And when people talk about it, Chinese will feel uncomfortable or even embarrassing.
I don't know why, tradition? Culture? Maybe~

As far as I heard from other expats' wives, apparently there is close to zero sex education in China. That one couple I know have a son that's going out with a local, and he learned she was clueless! Apparently it's because it's taboo to talk about intercourse. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that!

There would be no problem if no one had any sexuality in China. But Westerner come to China, disrupt the balance and before you know it, venereal diseases spread out throughout the country. Maybe that's why they are being taught at university about STDs and the like.

No sexual education until university, and as some have said, even then, the quality and the actual 'educating' is abysmal.

The real sexual education in Chinese universities takes place in the university campus - more specifically in the bushes.

Right before I came to China a while ago, I was listening to the radio, where a Chinese university counselor was talking about exactly this.

She had two university students come up to her with 'a problem'. They told her they'd been sleeping in the same bed for a year now, but that for some reason the girl just couldn't seem to get pregnant.

It sounds impossible, but I swear I am not making this shit up. It's an extreme example, but I think it gives a decent picture of how crappy the sex education classes must be like.

This was a few years back, so who knows, perhaps things have changed since then...

GuilinRaf:

I know what you mean. I had one student (university) who was very worried that she may be pregnant because her boyfriend had kissed her "too hard".

Well, Sex education in China is as simple as that : boys in one room to talk about male genitalia , girls in the other room to talk about female genitalia.
Second, as the character for "sex" is forbidden in public places, then you can understand the level of sex education one may have in this country.
A female friend of wife thought that a women would have egg any time she wants to reproduce.

Up until recently part of the official marriage process was going to watch a documentary about how to have sex, I'm not joking on this. Even westerners were subject to the process (validated by an expat who had to sit through it), they teach the whole process.

Nowadays they have started to realise that sex-ed is important and some schools are teaching it but it's very hit and miss, no national curriculum yet just schools who feel they want to include it as a subject.

is that documentary online. have signed the wedding paper without this

Doesn't happen anymore I think. I also signed the marriage cert. 1 year ago and didn't have to do this. Maybe in some places (small towns) you might have to, you would be in a group with about 10-20 other men and the women would be in another room watching the same video.

In some (well in one or two) ways this could be seen to be a good thing. It puts the burden of sex education firmly on the parents. I know many people in the UK who think sex education starts too early ( 6 or 7 in some schools). This gives them that choice.

Personally I will give such education to my daughter, if my wife won't I will, now obviously some stuff is better from the mother (most of it for a daughter) but if my wife feels unable then I will reluctantly do it myself.

Age 8 - 10 - What the body is, i.e. what's 'down there' and what it does. (Better with a mirror and obviously MUST be done by the mother / grandmother. If mother won't cant then there are videos online or for purchase.

Age 11 ish (pre first menstruation), what happens in puberty, why it happens, where babies come from, how they get there. Basically everything apart from the joys and pitfalls of the sexual act itself.

Age 12 - 14 (depending on mental and physical maturity) the potential joys and problems of the sexual act, contraception, STDs, womens choice.

Now this is not a hard and fast agenda and will obviously be different for every individual, it's just a starting template for what I consider appropriate for my daughter.

Edit, aged 14 - first boyfriend a demonstration to the boyfriend of results of 'wrong' actions involving a samurai sword and a sausage.

Things have definitely changed, THERE IS SEX EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS.

I teach a lot of teenagers that go to a variety of different schools in Beijing and they have all described in great detail the sex education classes they have to attend.

They watch videos, learn all about different STDs and the classes are co ed not separated, the kids are starting to learn this stuff from 11-12 years old.

They all seem pretty grossed out about their teachers going into great detail about periods and how babies are made but so was I when I was that age. They are advised to have protected sex and are given strategies to say no to pressure from boys and boys are told that no means no. Maybe there are more conservative attitudes but they are being given all the information.

And they have a lot of drug education now as well. My thirteen year olds can list all kinds of drugs and what happens when you take them. I'll agree that in the past there was no sex education but nowadays I get the impression it's pretty much the same as the west. Not sure about the countryside but there is definitely some kind of government initiative to have sex and drug education in schools.

I asked them if their parents knew that they were being shown these kinds of graphic videos and learning that at certain times of the month they would want sex more, etc and they all said that they didn't tell their parents about the sex education classes. I wonder if any Chinese parents would object to how young they are being shown and what they are being shown..

I used to think there was no sex education and in the past this was definitely true but I was surprised to learn that nowadays things have changed a lot and there is definitely comprehensive sex and drug education for school kids about to start puberty.

Boys are educated what to do with women through hardcore porn. Girls? I believe head teachers give private tutoring lessons in hotel rooms. They are very generous wit their free lessons. It may become mandatory by law some day.

Seeing as how I had to convince a woman in her late 20s that condors would not rot out her uterus, I'm going to say that it is non-existent.

When my TILF in HS announced the SexEd Class for the semester, I asked her if the Final Exam would be 'Oral'.

I'm guessing her sense of humor was not as well-developed as her figure as my grade for that class was an F.    :-p

You got an F? Was it because the final exam was "oral" =p?
