I have a foreign boyfriend who loves football so much.He knows a foreign website where people bet on football. As a girl i dont know whats that. But just like any chinese,i think betting can ruin someone.it is just like drug. But my boyfriend seems think its nothing. So i wonder it is cultrue crash or what?Do foreigners think betting can destroy one's life?
Having a bet once in awhile is no harm I do it on big events back home but I am not addicted to it. I know my limit in how much I can bet and will not go overboard. I have seen personally lives/relationships ruined due to gambling addiction.
But if he is only betting a few dollars and not his salary you shouldn't have any problems.
In some countries it is quite common to place some regular weekend bets.
If he is betting in excess then that is a problem.
"But just like any chinese,i think betting can ruin someone."
Sorry, this just confuses me!! Chinese LOVE to bet!!!*
Especially once they move OS.
As has already been indicated, if it's well within a person's means, and doesn't have adverse effects on the basics of living, it's not problem. If it's an addiction, and there is suffering involved from the consequences, it's bad.
(*so much so, they invaded. The Dalai Lama wasn't too happy)

free ta bet hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Nothing done with moderation and within existing means is or could be bad. Well, maybe except drugs or poisons.
If your BF bets on one game, once per week, a few Rmb, you should have no worries, it will be normal. But if he bets on every game, every night, and above and beyond his salary then you will have one hell of a problem in your hands.
And on a side issue, it is a well known fact that all Chinese love to gamble. Not because I say so, but because it is documented everywhere. Look at the Chinese run lotteries, or the electronic welfare lottery, it is run every night, not like abroad that many are done after a few weeks of betting. So, why are you so concern about "gambling"?. Or is it that he is just doing it beyond "moderate" status ?.
So i wonder it is cultrue crash or what?Do foreigners think betting can destroy one's life?
Well, in almost every city in America, most types of betting are illegal, and gambling is restricted in one form or another in most of the major western countries.
I do think it can destroy some people's lives. Other people do it with moderation.
I see Chinese men gambling constantly. On sports, on majiang, on those stupid machines they have. If anything, Chinese gamble far more often than foreigners.
This was a completely non-racial question, but your instinct was to immediately declare the perfection of the Chinese and then turn in into a race issue, while pointing an accusing finger at all foreigners. You are a typical racist idiot, and I hope your boyfriend realizes this and leaves you. People like you should die in the gutter.
The key word here is 'can'. Yes, betting 'can' ruin your life, if it becomes an obsession and an addiction.
Many other things can ruin your life as well; obviously alcohol, drugs etc can ruin your life, but so can overwork, laziness, any kind of obsession really... some people's families even manage to ruin their lives, but I doubt you'd suggest people have nothing to do with their families! As other have mentioned above, "everything in moderation" is the way to go.
ED: One more piece of advice. Do NOT attempt to ban your boyfriend from using the website if he wants to. Raise your concerns, sure, in an adult manner if you're capable of it, ensure he doesn't have an addicitve personality that will make use of the website a problem. But DON'T attempt to make race an issue and then ban him from gambling. If he's a man worth having, that's a good way to lose him!
do or die, heheh, all excess is always harmfull.\, am a big fan of Real Madrid but i never bet at any of his greatest games with Barcelona, just sit back with some Barca fans ,watch while we drink, discus and argue about who is the best.
just like anything in life if you can afford its no problem if you cant afford it and its causing financial problems its a problem in the us i gamble quit often but its not a problem i take what i can afford and no more and never take my credit cards to the casino
As far as I am concerned..i consider it as a social crime..i have seen some family destroyed due to the habit of Gambling/Betting..A guy who has to take care of his family has ruined the life of his wife and innocent childrens..I still remember this experience..and i am totally against that person who is addicted to this..
Ok, I'll bet you 1000¥ that he continues to keep gambling and that he actually wagers more money and more often than you are aware of.
Are we on ?
How much is he betting? The worst that could come out of a single/casual bet is that you lose what you've invested. I frankly think that betting on sports is stupid, but it's not going to destroy someone. Gambling addictions can ruin your life, though--does your boyfriend pathologically NEED to bet on his football matches? Will he get upset if he is not able to do so? Does he spent hours on this website? If he exhibits those behaviors, then he has a sickness, and needs help before it does wreck him.
I made money on PokerStars (can I write PokerStars?) but gambling is addictive and some people lose their houses and all their money. They can't stop.
Can your boyfriend watch football for two weeks without betting? If he can, that's good.
Does he make small bets? [good]
Does he lose more than he wins? [bad]
Does he lose, then bet more on the next game to break even? [bad, very bad]
... Wait, this is 41 weeks old! They either broke up or they are married!
How often do people bet on mahjong games in China? I don't like to betting, I hate loosing. If your boy friend is not betting large amounts of money, then it is not a problem.
Betting is like an addiction so yes it can ruin one's life. There are good addictions and bad addictions. I'm pretty sure betting falls under the bad addiction. Being addicted to let's say reading would be considered a good addiction because it helps you to think and it will also help you to learn new things. Betting on the other hand does neither so therefore, it's bad and yes it can ruin your life if you are not careful! Basically don't think that just because someone else could make a fortune by betting that you could too. There financial status and yours could be different. A million dollars to them may be nothing (!
He he, I said: "million"!
Betting can seriously destroy one's life if you welch on bets with the wrong people!
My crazy Ex GF would lose about 4000K a month of MY money playing Mahjong and she would routinely stay out all night to play...she had a massive problem with gambling but mostly a massive losing problem and was convinced she would win the next time every time.
Some people can handle it (like me in very small amounts) and other people can't.
Yes, I agree it can destroy your life.
When I was working in the USA, one of my coworkers ran a gambling pool where people would place their bets through him and he'd handle all the payouts, minus a few percent for the winners that he kept in management fees.
It worked great for a few years, but then he suddenly stopped showing up for work one day and people were looking for him to get their money because they had won the bet they made.
Turns out this guy had taken people's money when they placed their bets and instead of keeping that money safe, he used that money for gamling on something completely unrelated and lost it all. So he couldn't pay back the money that he owed to the winners. Turns out, he'd actually been doing this for a long time with a lot of success and nobody knew about it..
So not only did he lose all that money, but he ended up losing his job as well because he didn't show up for work. It wasn't a great job, but it certainly wasn't some minimum wage job..
Usually, gambling alone isn't a problem. However, Gambling + Greed together can easily destroy any man or woman. If my coworker would have just been happy getting a few percentage points from the winners, his life wouldn't have been ruined, but it just wasn't enough for him.
IMO, it's a good life lesson.. If you know somebody who has a gamling + greed problem, then they need to get professional help.
