I spoke to someone the other day who taught her kid from home. It got me wondering if many families opt for this since international schools are so expensive here. But at the same time, how do parents know that their kids are not falling behind? Do they get an official curriculum to go by and do the kids get to take state exams like SATs or A Levels?

Some ExPats I know do teach their kids at home. Various reasons for that I have been told:
1.- when arriving, many children do not speak Chinese, so their time at school is boring and wasted.
2.- while grammar schooling here is free for all nationals, foreigners must pay a charge, and could be quite expensive in some cases. I heard of one person in Guangzhou claiming a 6,00 Rmb once a year, and 1500 each month, but have no way of knowing if true or not3.- A local friend from Florida contacted the Florida School Board of Education, and got a curriculum for their child, and they do follow it. They get periodical exams thru Internet, and the kid takes, or so they claim.
I have no idea if there are many, or just a few. I only know one case of one child who went to a Chinese school. For the first year she learned Chinese, nothing else. From then on, after becoming fluent, she has gone thru a few grades already, and does speak, reads and writes Mandarin. The rest I know either go to foreign schools or are taught at home.
I have 2 children and they are currently going to an "American" school. As the previous poster said, it can be quite expensive. For 1st grade the school I am using charges over 120krmb per year, per student.
I have not heard of anyone using the home school method, but I am sure there are plenty. I think the easiset way would be to contact the US home schooling authority and ask them if it is even allowed and what the requirements are.
