Just curious!
American Automobile Association?
Alcholics Anonymous?
something else, perhaps...might you clue us in?
Alcoholism is not considered to be a disease or a serious problem in China, it's just a bad habit. So I don;t think it can be found here.
well, maybe in big cities, I wouldn't know.
mArtiAn:
It's not a disease, or at least if it is a disease the only one with the cure is the one with the affliction. But I think they do have AA meetings in Shanghai.
Samm11:
Alcoholism is a broad term for problems with alcohol, and is generally used to mean compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcoholic beverages, usually to the detriment of the drinker's health, personal relationships, and social standing. It is medically considered a disease, specifically an addictive illness.

mArtiAn:
Fair enough but it seems to me that we in the west have built something of a mollycodling approach to much that doesn't warrant such harsh labeling as the word 'illness'. I mean, many regard over-eating as an illness, and in a way, sure, it is, any addiction has its roots in the heart and mind of the addicted in such a way that the affliction can be termed an illness, but I see that as a dangerous thing for it takes responsibility away from the one with the condition and gives them an excuse to continue in a negative cycle of behaviour when in fact, as with any addiction, the only one with the cure is the one with the addiction. Using the term 'illness' may be useful in helping that person forgive themself and break the pattern of self hatred that is such a key element in addictive personalities, but ultimately that person has to realize they have the free will to escape those patterns altogether, whereas someone with cancer or hepatitis or some such genuine illness does not. To me that's the defining distinction.
There is an English-language AA for sure in Shanghai. It might be a good way to meet numerous members of this Board.

All meetings listed are at Alano Club unless otherwise noted.
