After my first Chinese girlfriend explained to me why Chinese boys carried their girlfriend's purse, I wanted to give it a go just to try to adapt to the cultural difference, but the next day, I stopped carrying it because I felt like we looked like a lesbian couple.

I don't mind carrying heavy shopping bags though.

Is your question intended to mean whether or not I carried my girlfriend's purse when we were dating?  If so, then the answer is no, not ever.  If your question intended to mean whether or not I assisted her with suitcases and the like that she was trundling along with, then the answer would be yes.

Yes, but only in her country, late at night, and when out of the sight of other foreigners. Hey, relationships require compromise. If we are in the US then she knows better than to ask. The purse thing is one of the few concessions I've made to her in regards to acting more like a Chinese "man." I've made it pretty clear that I'm not going to own a purse myself, or wear those ridiculous Milhouse Van Houten pants, or get a rooster hair cut. I make up for it by making an honest effort to start nagging her more, which is what she says she wants.

A gentlemen would a scumbag wouldn't. It's how you would want people to see you in public. Obviously if you are at a store and your girl is trying something on you hold something for her so that she can have her hands free. It's the norm in society not just here. Just like opening doors for ladies is the gentlemen like thing to do. It's what we call the norm helping people when they need a helping hand.

Nope...we have an agreement.  I will carry anything for her just not her purse.

Unless of course she is trying on clothes or something like that...but I have never walked with it.

When I see the local Chinese dudes carrying their gf's purse down the street I make eye contact with them and then shake my head slowly as I walk past with a very disappointed look on my face.

I can't say what I would do if I saw a foreign man doing this as it hasn't happened yet.

If she needs help while she is looking in a store, or if there is some reason she needs help, then no problem, I will carry it for a few minutes.

But in general, just walking down the street, I dont. She knows that and so doesnt ask unless its for a reason.

If she is trying on clothes, or doing something where it isn't possible for her to hold her purse, then yes.  But if she wants me to hold it just because she doesn't want to, then no.  I tell her that if she doesn't want to carry it, then she should have left it at home or in the car.

However, I do carry everything else that needs to be carried without complaint.  I was taught that men were supposed to carry heavy things and women were supposed to carry purses.

And most Chinese girls that I have talked to pretty much admit that when they do this it is just to show the world that A) There man is taken.  And B) They have him trained well.  My wife doesn't play these games, which is why I married her.

Perhaps only an insecure woman wants a man to carry her purse at un reasonable times.  If we are walking down the street no I usually will not carry it, but if she wants to go into a store or its a burden for her to carry for some reason then yes i will carry it for her.  Some women think its a sign that a man does not love her if he refuses to carry it, but that's simply rubbish.  I say if she does not want to carry her purse then why bring it?  Its not like she will try to pay for things.  Furthermore, having a man carry the purse goes against the whole idea of having a purse in the first place.

Be reasonable, but if you can't be reasonable be gone.

I never do and always point at those who do.  I can not accept it for longer than 20secs which are necessary for "woman things to be done". devil

Whenever she asks me to carry it for her, I do, and I don't mind at all.

My wife sometimes asks me to carry it for her and I refuse, just like others have said if she needs to tie a shoelace or is trying on clothes then that's different but I will never carry her purse. I don't like to get into the games that Chinese women play because once it starts and you allow it, it will never ever end. A girl I used to date tried to play these games and the relationship quickly ended. With my wife she knows what I will and will not do, she still asks but she knows what the answer will be so doesn't get upset about it.

If my girl is busy shopping or something, ill hold it.... with 2 fingers to show everyone Im disgusted by this act. With a gross look on my face.  If shes really been holding it all day and tired. Ill throw it in a plastic bag and carry that.  Other than that, she understands im uncomfortable with that. So she usually leaves it in the car and fills my pockets with her crap. A good compromise I feel.

In short yes, but sometimes no. If she wants to load it with LOTS of crap, then she can carry that lard arse weight around herself.

I don't even offer to carry a handbag or purse. If she had a large rack sack then sure no problem and I would insist on carrying it for her.

A:Getting my second dose of Moderna in a couple weeks. This is perhaps the only benefit of being in the US now. Then I can go to one of the countries that allows vaccinated tourists. IMO, worth the wait. @Nasboroguy: The Chinese government has already admitted that their two vaccines are not as effective as they initially said. No big surprise. Now they are talking about mixing Sinopharm/Sinovac with Astrazeneca. Covid may be (barely) contained in China, but as long as the billions of people there haven't received an effective vaccine, the entire country will be at risk of continuous outbreaks such as Thailand is dealing with now. If you have access to an effective vaccine (there are a few including Pfizer, Moderna, and even Sputnik V) then I would just get it. Sure, the effectiveness will wane after a year or two, but that's what booster shots are for. Although I don't understand why people wouldn't want to get a vaccine, I respect their decision not to get it. As for myself, I feel as if a tremendous burden has been lifted and I can soon walk into a bar for a pint (just not in the US, haha). -- Quinn68
