Q: Do you know any foreigners that have died in China?
Yep, a girl in EF Chengdu died last year in her company-supplied apartment because of a gas leak. Two roomsmates did not show up at a company event, no one checked on them, but sent someone to the apartment when they did not come to work. One was dead, the other was hospitalized.
In true EF fashion, the company tried to blame the lsurvivor for the incident, probably before she even woke up. I'm sure the company dodged any liability to the dead girl's family, even though their defective apartment was to blame. There is no E or F in the word CLASS after all.

Not in China. But I was traveling back to my work in Chonburi, Thailand via Hat Yai and noticed something odd in the air. Happened to be some bombs went off just the day before. visited the local expat restaurant and pub, and they said a young canadian teacher died yesterday from a bomb blast just across the narrow street. this was late 2000s. when working in Gauangzhou in 2013, I met an American teacher who happened to personally know the Canadian who had died. so weird.. small world.

I know/knew a guy who died in Thailand, as well. Stuck his head out of the train and "Wham!" He was in a coma for about a week and then they pulled the plug. He was on a round-the-world ticket with his girlfriend. They were only about 1 month into their journey.
A guy I sort of knew died here. He had been here a long time, was getting on in years and had health problems. He died at home which has to be better than on some street corner somewhere.
I had heard talk of him saying he was going to go home, or maybe to a nice place in the sun somewhere but for whatever reason he didn't. I suppose he either thought he had more time, or he decided that China was where he felt the most comfortable and was where he wanted to die. I hope it was the latter, he was a good man.
It made me think about my life here. You can't control random accidents which could take you out at any time so no point worrying about them, but if I found out I had something that was going to drop me eventually I'd be on the first plane out.
The idea of collapsing on some squalid, filthy street and dying while people around you gawk and point, make jokes and take pictures seems awful to me. I don't want the last thing I hear to be a revolting spit.

A dear friend died a few years back in Guangzhou in his sleep of a hearth failure. It was a big problem, the local Police did not want the body released from Hospital until US Consulate authorized cremation. The Consulate's position was that they had no authority to do that, it was up to the family to decide. The family wanted cremation, but the Police will not bulge from their position. Almost two months after the best the family got was for the Consulate to issue a letter stating that they will approve the family's decision to cremate, then the Police was happy and allowed the Hospital top release the body to the funeral home. What a mess it was.
Since then, I made and carry with me a letter in Chinese authorizing my better half to dispose of my body in whatever form she sees fit, signed by two witnesses, and notarized by a Chinese lawyer. Hope that helps when my turn arrives !
I don't know any other foreigners, so I am probably the only person that I know who will die herr.
Black dude/African was stabbed last year in Fuzhou, while on stroll with Chinese GF.

He was working at a club and was talking with a Chinese girl (not his GF) and a group of Chinese guys couldn't handle a foreigner talking to "their" woman and chased him into the street, stabbing him to death. No arrests have been made. He was the second foreigner to have been killed in Fuzhou in less than a year. FZ is one of the most xenophobic cites in China.

I read that 'news' just after I signed Contract with School in Jianou, some 80 miles N of Fuzhou. I don't remember details, but he was stabbed, while talking to Chinese girl.
They are all 'gorgeousness' in Fujian. Ridding vespas in minis. Me: 'I can see your undies, tra-la-la.....'
Fortunately no. But I heard stories of people who died under questionable circumstances, with the authorities being involved in the cover-up rather than investigating. It's like the Wild West at times.
Some Chinese relatives died or were involved in fatal road accidents or work-related deaths. Awful compensation battles. What a slimy mess. I mean that figuratively.
The saddest was a Chinese uncle-once-removed of my wife. He fixed our frying pan free. Got hit by a truck on his scooter. He was one of the few kind-without-expectation people I met, and he went by almost unnoticed. But I remembered him when my wife spoke of the accident.
We were on that road the evening it happened and saw the body. Only the next day we learned it was him. 
A friend of mine who worked with a woman (cant remember her name) in a kindergarten,the woman committed suicide by jumping off a high rise building in Shenzhen.
if you go on to facebook and type Justice For Mei you will read about a Chinese woman named Mei and and New Zealand man named Michael.They were friends of mine in China. well Michael stabbed his wife to death in New Zealand. Check out the story.
The New Zealand police got in touch with me a few years ago about the relationship between Mei and Michael while they were in China.
The trial has just finished and Michael will be sentenced today I think.

Let me try to make sense of this. So Michael (the foreigner) was your friend, but he killed his wife in New Zealand. Then after killing his wife he evaded detection from the NZ police and got a job in a kindergarten in China. And it wasn't until after Michael came to China that the police in NZ found out he was the killer?

The savage killing of Wellington woman Mei Fan at the hands of her estranged husband has been described by a judge as a brutal, cruel and callous crime. Michael Preston, 60, will spend at least 19 years behind bars for murdering Ms Fan in her home in November 2013 and breaching a protection order she had taken out against him. A jury in the High Court at Wellington last month took just three-and-a-half hours to find Preston guilty of both charges. Handing down the life sentence with a minimum non-parole period of 19 years on Wednesday, Justice Joe Williams said it was "impossible to imagine the horror of the last moments of Ms Fan's life as you carried out this execution". Preston stabbed Ms Fan in the neck and face 15 times with a 30cm kitchen knife, before he left her to die in a pool of her own blood. The evidence was clear that Ms Fan had tried to defend herself during the attack and as she lay dying, Preston went about staging a "very unconvincing burglary" in a bid to cover his tracks. Preston then left the knife that he used to stab Ms Fan embedded in her neck as a "mark of ultimate victory", Justice Williams said. "This killing was brutal, cruel and indeed callous to a very high degree," he said. Earlier, in a victim impact statement read by a police officer to the court, Ms Fan's 72-year-old father Mao Yi Fan described the emotional toll the death of his daughter has taken. "The pain that has been inflicted on the family is simply indescribable," he said. "We have been tormented both mentally and physically." Mr Fan said that after his daughter met Preston, he and his wife became worried about her. He said Preston was often violent, lazy and sleazy, and he asked his daughter to consider divorcing her husband. "However, for the children, she was never able to take that next step," Mr Fan said. Mr Fan, who lives with his wife in a small village in inner Mongolia, described his daughter's killer as "not human, he's a murderous, evil incarnate". Meanwhile, Ms Fan's former partner Tani Hoyhtya told the court in his victim impact statement that he had wanted to marry Ms Fan. "I lost my everything the day I lost her," he said. In court, Mr Hoyhtya wore an earring containing the one carat diamond he had planned to give Ms Fan in an engagement ring.
