Q: Does any bank in China have lower fees for withdrawals?

I pay $5 for every withdrawal at ATM. I took out a large cash advance, the bank said they would charge me 480 and visa would charge me 480, The bank charged me 960 from my account, by only 480 on paper. Maybe I should have used my debit card. Im pissed. Bank of China. Does any other bank have lower fees?

Ted:

Bank of China, and many other Chinese banks, do charge fees for even sneezing inside the bank.

If you make a with drawl using a foreign credit card, if with a teller the fee will be 3 % of transaction total.  If you use ATM machine, the fee will be 1 % the last time I checked.

If you use a foreign debit card, probably you will encounter the same fees as with a credit card.

And if you have a Chinese debit card, if you use the card with the issuing bank ATM's, there will be no fee.  If use with another bank's ATM, I think the fee is 4 Rmb.  Or if use debit card outside the province you live, then there is also a fee.

The only way to beat this is to have an account with Bank of America, and here go to their correspondent bank, Construction Bank, and use there your foreign cards for withdrawals with no fees.

I personally dislike using my CC in China. What I do is allow my money to accumulate back home, and I do make two wire transfers each year, and using the above explained set up, cost me nothing. Once here, I exchange dollars into Rmb at electronic transfer rates, which are the highest.avfailable (better that cash by maybe as much as 0.05 kuai per dollar). And back in the States, my best interest on savings is under 2 %, here Bank of China pays 5-3/8 % for a 3 year CD or a bit over 3 % for one year.

it is not about the chinese bank. fees are decided by your home bank. for me it is a fixed amount like 15rmb + 1.8% of the withdrawn amount, doesnt matter which bank im using.

the agricultural bank of china has relatively low rates of withdrawals but you must have an account in their bank, if you intent to use your bank card from home to withdraw money here , then you will definitively be charged higher taxes, bank of china is the worse in china in therms of charges even if you have an account in their bank while the agricultural bank of china seems to win more foreign customers for their good services and their relative low rates.

I am not sure, are you talking about Chinese Banks of Foreign Banks with Visa or MC? Did you withdraw funds from Chinese or foreign Banks?

I am using SPD and Everbright Bank. There are no fees, if I use my ATM card at the same Bank in different cities or Provinces than my maiden account.

Go into the bank to take your money out instead of using a machine and you should not be charged any fee. If you are then switch to HSBC which does not charge fees for in-bank transactions other than wire-transfers.

TedDBayer:

I spent an entire day trying to withdraw 30000 from tellers. Tellers just kept saying use ATM. The fees would be too high. I had my GF trying to help me. I was just furious because Chinese I find to be lazy and can't think outside the box. The next day I went into a bank I was in by myself and demanded 30000 from my card. The teller had o senda fax to get approval. They still charged me a big fee.

if your money is from your home country, I think you can get the more cash at one time, and open a bank card in China, then when you get cash from China bank ATM, then it is free...

Hope I am understanding the correct way....
