Q: Does anyone else get frequent random phone calls from strangers?

I'm on China Mobile and almost daily I get a phone call from phone numbers I don't recognize or people I don't know.

My girlfriend said if I answer them I would get charged money.

Depending on the plan you have with China Mobile, if you pay for received calls, then it will cost you.  I do get also many calls and messages, mostly from salesman trying to sell me something.  But cell phones in China have caller ID, and if you register in memory the numers of your friends, when the phone rings it will show the name.  If it is not registered, it will show the phone number.  I do ignore calls when a name does not show.

I often get calls from unknown numbers day or night. I usually just push mute, and almost never answer. This is the reason why I put my phone on silent at night, as I've even gotten texts from the phone company at midnight before.

Not so many calls, but I constantly get text messages from people either wanting to sell me a house, car, or something else. All of the messages are in Chinese, all get deleted.

There is anotehr scam related to the pnoe. If your phone rings only once, do NOT call back as you will be charged a bundle. Havent been told how much, but when thta happens in front of my Chinese friends, they always warn me.

I do however, get approached by strangers all the time asking me for my phone number. Ijust smile sweetly and say "ting bu dong".

Yep. At least once or twice a week. Don't answer, just ignore and put that number on your phone's blacklist or list of blocked callers.

But on another note, whenever my family back home calls me, my caller id sometimes shows a mobile number from China. Does this also happen to anybody else?

Use the block function on your phone.

Used to happen but now not so much. I'm with Unicom.

You may get charged so it's best to not answer it, also if you do then they may keep calling back. Just go into your phone and find how to block the number.
