Q: finding a literary agent and/or publisher in China

based on my experiences of many hours of kindergarten and primary school "teaching" in china, i have had an idea for a series of children's picture books, in english.  these could be easily adapted to be educational and presented in a variety of forms of media. so, it is quite commercial. currently i am working on creating the characters and writing the stories for the books.

so my main questions are, should i look for a literary agent in china?  or should i look for a literary agent in my own country (new zealand).  or should i do both?  i do not have the financial means to publish the book myself.  or should i simply go straight to a publisher in china and/or nz?  i want to write the books for both native speakers of english as well as non-native speakers, so i am not sure if the place of publication will make a difference.

any constructive advice regarding publication of books written in english by a native speaker of english will be greatly appreciated.

anyone who submits disparaging comments will be burnt to a crisp by my death ray.

thanks!

Hi SecretSquirrel, I don't have any experience with publishers myself but I do know of a website with some good resources for aspiring writers: paper-republic.org. They've published a list of Chinese publishers here so that could be a starting point:

http://paper-republic.org/publishers/

I know someone who published a book written about China a few years ago but she decided to find a publisher in her home country, the US. It was a really tedious, long process and she got shot down by dozens of publishers before she found a publishing house willing to work with her. So be warned: it's not going to be easy and you should find yourself an agent to help you out.
