I was offered a job in Chengdu but we just found out my wife is pregnant. Can someone please comment on the quality of prenatal care at hospitals in Chengdu/China? Are the hospitals ok? Are they expensive? Would it be a good idea to give birth in Chengdu?
Thank you

I have friends (Chinese wife, Western husband) who've had babies here though in Guangzhou, not Chengdu. They reported good treatment with Chinese characteristics.
It helped a lot that the woman was Chinese as her and her Mother were able to talk to the hospital staff in Chinese. That will be on eof you rbiggest problems..
I can't comment in more detail or give you an idea of cost but once this is on the answered questions board you'll get feedback form others who have been through this.

I don't know anything about Chengdu, or even having a baby here but some of my friends have had babies.
What I took away from their experiences is that local knowledge and possibly your relationship with the doctor helps when choosing a hospital, and having the help and support of your inlaws is a huge help,
I don't know what your situation is, but I'm assuming that if you move to another city you won't know anyone there or have the support of friends and family.
For me, this would be a big factor in making the decision .
Absolute and total NO. Chengdu's hospitals are dirty, expensive and 'doctors' are wildly incompetent. What do you expect in a country with such wildly corrupt government?, proper regulation of the medical profession? Please. I went to see doctors in 'Huaxi hospital' (BEST IN CHENGDU!) for what should have been a filling in my tooth. The dentist destroyed my tooth and I ended up needing an extraction and a dental implant back in France. A friend of mine from the UK had a baby in Chengdu with his Chinese wife. The doctor was a total maniac and tried to perform a caesarian section without any clinical need, and risked killing his patient and her baby in order to make extra bucks. Getting your kid a passport from a non shitty country then becomes almost impossible. If you can have the baby in Europe/USA/Canada or somwhere developed, you would be a total maniac to even consider having a kid in Chengdu.

shanghai has some very good hospitals.you can try shanghai hong fangzi hospital
read on some forums about Shanghai and Guanzhou. Husbands had very good family insurance at work, so prices for good hospitals were about 70-100k. However there were mentioned decent cheaper places around 20k. IMO even 20K is a lot. I'm sure you can find decent place much cheaper. Ex. my friend was beaten up in Beijing, doctors had to stich him up, international hospital tried to charge sth around 8k and other hospital charged only couple of hundreds. You'd better look for the one with reanimation.
