Q: Has anyone seen the new popular Chinese show, "Where Are We Going, Dad?"

It's now hugely popular.. and all it is for a reality show is a bunch of male B-grade movie stars taking their kids out to the countryside. That's it. It's basically watching the vacation movies of famous people, but with huge production values. I mean, crane shots all the time as well as the visual and aural clutter of all those sound effects.

I don't get why it's so popular. Anyone care to say?

Yeah, I loved the episode where the dads where supposed to catch fish in a lake and they hadn't even bothered disguising the fact that the fish where already in a large net in one small area of the lake. That episode had some great added sound effects and humorous on screen stuff going for it.

Conceptually, I think the show does have value. It should just either be with top of the line celebs (if there is such a thing) or with average Wangs. The pseudo-celebrity part of the show is obnoxious.

It is interesting for people living in a society where men are expected to drink, cheat, drink more, beat their wife, where children are raised by nannies or grandparents etc. to see those men in the role of the caretaker, food provider and parent.

It could be a great drinking game. A shot of vodka each time the little fat girl whines about something.

This show plays up the "pristine environment" part. As though these half-famous guys go to a virginal part of China untouched by pollution and can regress in innocence with their younglings.

moparfan:

Crane shot: in which a camera is using for a shot in which it is attached to a crane. Is often lifted up.

Example: end of the first act, hero's lover/partner/sifu dies dying in their arms. The hero cries out, "Nnnoooooo!" The camera widens out as the hero keeps yelling themselves hoarse.

That's a crane shot.

Let's look at the check-list

* Crazy operator at the sound box, unleashing barrages of obnoxious sounds effects every minute.

* Kids crying and people thinking it's cute
* The story goes like "they wake up, walk around in some vaguely nice place, eat stuffs, go to bed".

Boring & annoying Tongue

Scandinavian:

oooh, did you see the one where they were rafting. there was almost a full second where the illusion of them being in the wilderness was complete, then some concrete pillars of a bridge showed up.

Just in case anyone has the thought "Hang on, is this original Chinese television", no it's not, it's a Korean (south) concept.

moparfan:

Very, very true. Am wondering how the original Korean show did with sound effects and cutsy graphics.

And to everyone: wow! I  didn't know there were so many Chinese TV connoisseurs!

I'm sitting typing this as my better half is watching the Korean version on the iPad.  There are even more cutesy sound effects, canned laughter and OTT graphics.  She's watched either the Chinese or Korean version every night for the past two weeks now - SAVE ME!!!

I watched it whilst getting a foot massage a few weeks ago, I enjoyed it. Was interesting to see a Chinese father actually looking after their kid.
